About the Author
Nick Hodges has been a part of the Delphi community from the very beginning. He is an original Delphi 1 beta tester, a former member of TeamB, an Advisory Board member for the annual Borland Conference, a frequent conference speaker, a blogger and author of numerous articles on a wide range of Delphi topics. Nick has a BA in Classical Languages from Carleton College and an MS in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. In his career he has been a busboy, a cook, a caddie, a telemarketer (for which he apologizes), an Office Manager, a high school teacher, a Naval Intelligence officer, a software developer, a product manager, and a software development manager. In addition, he is a former Delphi Product Manager and Delphi R&D Team Manager. He lives with his family in Gilbertsville, PA.

Excellent coverage of useful Delphi features that are often overlooked

I read through the eBook version and I really like how Nick has approached the chosen topics. I'd say it's roughly comparable to Jim Coplien's legendary work, "Advanced C++ Programming Styles and Idioms". Perhaps Delphi's popularity will expand now that Nick's book is available, in the same way that C++ use expanded after Coplien published his book. ;-)

The problem is, there's so much Delphi code that was written back in D4/D6 days that's still being maintained today, yet you hardly see any of the things in Nick's book being used in that old code.

Aside from the fact that many of these idioms hadn't been clearly identified back then, there's a lot of resistance to modify old code to improve it in any way. A big part of that is because managers today are so paranoid about cleaning up old code, rigidly adhering to the old, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" syndrome. There's a great solution to that, called "Unit Testing", which is one of the topics Nick covers quite adeptly. However, in order to implement Unit Testing in old Delphi code, you pretty much have to rewrite the code to support Dependency Injection (DI), which is another topic Nick discusses nicely.

I'd give the book 5 stars if Nick were to add a section that digs into how you might go about modifying old code to use the cool ideas he presents. Otherwise, it's just a lot of interesting stuff that won't ever be used. Another thing I'd like to see is an example that employs most of the things that Nick discusses, like a framework of some kind.

On the other hand, if you're developing NEW apps in Delphi XE4 or later (and I sure wish more people were), then this book will give you some great programming idioms and strategies to embrace in your designs that will ultimately simplify things and reduce bugs. I mean ... it's full of stuff that should be easily noticeable in contemporary apps written these days. I look at old code any more and I want to gag. The last batch of old code I worked with, I estimated we could have reduced the number of source lines of code by 40%-60%, resulting in far more readable code that also eliminated a bunch of coding errors I found in the process (because the code would have been so much more concise).

As an aside, I'd like to mention that Delphi itself has evolved into an extremely powerful language, and the IDE is still far easier to use than any other platform I've worked with for most things. I only wish Embarcadero would do something to redesign the IDE so it's not rigidly locked into the same programming paradigm introduced with Dephi 1, where you have a project composed of a bunch of independent unrelated forms. How about a way to structure an MVC- or MVVM-based app the same way it handles those ancient apps that use MDI forms? (Yes, Delphi still supports MDI forms!)

One thing notable about Nick's book is it focuses exclusively on code, ignoring the IDE -- hence the title: "Coding in Delphi". Many of the things Nick covers (particularly Interfaces and Dependency Injection) are helpful for building more abstract frameworks, like MVC or MVVM style apps. You need them to design around the walls set up by the IDE because of the structure it imposes on your code.

Anybody who remembers writing apps in MSC that ran in Windows knows that the best thing that Delphi did that made it stand out when it was first released was to introduce what amounted to "de-multiplexed" Windows messaging. It did this by implementing individual event handlers for every meaningful Windows event that a form needs to handle. Before Delphi, you had to hand-code the message handling loop so it would demultiplex your events and send each one out to a different (hand-coded) handler. If you added an event, you needed to modify the message handling loop and then add a handler (usually in a different unit). It was a royal PITA. Delphi was revolutionary in that it hid the Windows message loop entirely by giving you a list of events you could hook into for any object on your form. You simply double-click on the event name in the Object Inspector, and poof! You'e taken instantly to a pre-defined event handling method in the SAME form unit! It's still the same after all these years...

Ironically, when you get into designing frameworks like MVC, you really WANT to be able to handle multiplexed events through a single dispatcher and listener that multiple units (some of which may be forms) need to understand and reflect completely. We also see this in the kind of marshalling that's used by COM objects and Interfaces, as well as the mechanisms needed to implement web services (eg., SOAP, REST, etc.).

Strings are frequently used to identify the actions to be taken, and you'd typically use a case statement to handle them, except that in Delphi, case statements don't work with string variables.

So you have to go out of your way to add a layer of string mapping, multiplexing, and demultiplexing to overcome Delphi's limitations if you want to work with contemporary design patterns and web services in Delphi. DI helps, but it typically obscures what's being done in the process -- which is another reason for embracing Unit Testing. (And in fairness, I'm not sure Visual Studio, Eclipse, or other programming platforms are much better in this respect. Hey guys, it's 2014 already! Why are we still programming inside of IDEs designed around programming paradigms maturing in 1990?)

If you're going to go this route, you definitely want to get a copy of Nick's book because he covers a lot of things that would be useful in these situations, particularly the discussions about generics, DI, object containers, and the Spring4D container library.

Great introduction to implementing modern patterns and unit testing with Delphi

Nick's book goes through Delphi language features which have been added in the last 5-10 years, particularly Delphi XE2 onwards. It covers many of the same language features described in the excellent Delphi XE2 Foundations book but with a rather different slant. Nick's main focus is on how to use these language improvements to implement modern programming concepts, in particular unit testing. In the process Nick covers new tools which are built on these same language features such as Spring4D, DUnitX and the Delphi Mocks Framework.

The result is an excellent and thought provoking introduction to new ways to develop in Delphi. Anyone who hasn't been keeping up with the latest in software development theory and the related Delphi advancements will learn a lot from reading Coding in Delphi.

So why not 5 stars? After all I learned some things I didn't know and came to view several concepts in a different light as a result of reading the book. The problem was that for me the book didn't dig deeply enough and I would have liked Nick to grapple more with some of the tricky questions. Many times while reading it I found myself thinking yes, but what about this problem, side effect or catch 22.

For example Nick tries to build a case for using interfaces heavily for most, if not all, references because, as he points out, this makes for a decoupled design which is comparatively easy to unit test. The obvious problem is that interface and object references don't mix well and using both is likely to lead to AVs. Nick mentions this and suggests you never mix them. This is all very well but by necessity all components, including data access components, are object referenced and freed as objects. So what are we to do? Don't include any components in our unit tests? Or use interfaces from these components to allow easy mocking and just accept that we're going to have to be very careful to nil all interface references before we let the components be freed?

Most of my concerns were along similar lines. It is easy to demonstrate interfaces, mocking, dependency injection, using a service locator just once at the root of the application to build all dependencies, etc in a simple example. It is another to then assume that all of these smoothly scale out to real world complexity without the need for compromises or new approaches.

For all that the book is clearly still a 4 star book and brings a lot to the table in its own right. Perhaps it just needs a more in-depth sequel by Nick or a related party?

great exploration of non-visual aspects

Too little has been written on Delphi, these past few years. To borrow from Sam Clemens, the death of the language has been greatly exaggerated. Nick presents a number of the more recent (and not so recent) additions to the Delphi language, and makes plain the advantages in using them. In the matter of interfaces, he harps (and admits it.)

Full disclosure: I participated in the online review process during the writing, and proofread the first full draft. I'm a long-time Delphi developer, and yes, I am biased.

The worst I can say of this book is that I wish Nick had gone a bit deeper in some areas. It should be in your library, and will amply repay your investment in purchase and study.

Third Edition is Good But Not Great

New technologies like Google Analytics change so fast. I purchased the third edition of this book from among a group of three or four books on this subject because it was the newest release. A second consideration, for me, was that I wanted a book specific to Google Analytics rather than a book focused on the larger subject of Web analytics. I wanted a book that would point me at the important features of this tool without reading an extra 300 pages of analytics theory.

This book delivers as a quick start guide and reference to Google Analytics, but it also has some minor flawed. The coverage of advanced applications of Google Analytics is good. It presents clear examples of how to use all the features of Analytics, and puts all those features in a larger context. The book is both a blueprint for setting up your site analytics, and a reference you can revisit later. That larger context of how to set up your first analytics program is what makes this book worth buying. There are plenty of topics on the Web about using Google Analytics, but you don't get a good guide to the big picture of how to set up your analytics program from a bunch of disparate topics scattered around the Internet.

This new edition has some flaws. Especially in the first third of the book, some topics aren't very well written. For example, in the introductory section of the book, where they compare Google Analytics to log file analyzers, some of what is said seems to be wrong, and the information on setting up your tracking code is a bit outdated. Minor problems but worse than what I would expect in a published book.

Bottom line, it serves the purpose of an introduction and guide to Google Analytics. I'm using it.

A good book that explains Google Analytics in a really good way.

Two things i have against the book:
1- Doesn't really say much about web metrics.
2- Google Analytics is a product that move very fast and I don't think there is a book that can handle that.

My advice: read the book but keep your self busy with the tool it self for better understanding.

I purchased this book because I manage the analytics account for my company and really wanted some helpful assistance for using the more complex functions of analytics - like event tracking and custom reports. Awakened to Abuse After Decades

Several weeks before leaving my abusive husband after 42 years of marriage, I read "The Verbally Abusive Relationship" by Patricia Evans. I noted many passages that clearly described the abusive tactics he was using on me.

The information, however, was just so irrefutable, so undeniably true, it was far too painful for me to fully realize and assimilate at the time.

Sixteen months after leaving him, I picked the book off the closet shelf and re-read it, this time noticing many more abusive characteristics of his and experiences I went through in the past. Numerous passages were boldly marked this time, and many more notes were made. Virtually every page held so many similarities to what I had been experiencing in this abusive relationship.

After decades of being unaware of this type of abuse, I finally arrived at the realization that he was indeed extremely verbally abusive during our marriage. This was a tremendous revelation to me, as I had unconsciously hidden and "forgotten" even the physical assault that occurred early in the marriage. Before we married, however, he was attentive and I thought he loved me as I loved him.

I thought that verbal abuse was mainly name calling and hurling outright insults. My to be ex husband did not often call me names and obvious insults were rather rare, although he did call me stupid and crazy a few times. Yes, he did beat me severely early in our marriage, but he was mainly a covert abuser. His methods were insidious and had me feel that I was to blame for just about everything that went wrong.

He would often criticize men and women on TV, their physical faults, mouth too large, crooked nose, too fat, too thin, etc. He was particularly critical of confident women broadcasters, and would be very insulting of them. I finally stood up to him and let him know that he was being very cruel. In hindsight I realize I felt more protective of other people than myself.

One of the most painful and damaging aspects of his abusive ways was his obvious delight in seeing my hurt responses to his insidiously cruel remarks... the smirk, the laugh, the hate-filled look. As time went on, I learned to hide my feelings and to refrain from reasoning or arguing with him. I could never "win" anyway. It hurts to realize that the one who promised to love and cherish you didn't really care for you.

He seemed to get a lot of pleasure in seeing me suffer physically as well. It was a freezing cold day and I went out to the garage to bring in an item from the car. I somehow locked myself out of the house. I was dressed only in my indoor clothing, and frantically knocked on the doors and windows for him to let me inside. I was becoming very cold, and being in my 60's, was concerned that I would quickly become hypothermic. He did not answer my cries. I went in side the car, but it wasn't any warmer, as I didn't have the keys to start it. I was too embarrassed to ask for help from a neighbour. Finally after about 30 minutes or so and repeated knocks and cries he answered the door. He said he didn't hear me earlier. He appeared very unconcerned about me and the whole incident. I just let it go as I knew better than to argue with him...he would just yell irrational insults at me. I just couldn't handle his insults any longer.

Shortly afterwards, when our son and his wife and children were visiting, he recounted his story, about my locking myself out of the house. He made me sound stupid. I was hurt, and quietly remarked that I became very cold and wondered when he would answer the door.

Before we married, I happily looked forward to being his wife. I was a loving and attentive wife to him, and was faithful to him throughout our marriage, working very hard in raising our children, cooking good nutritious meals and maintaining the home and businesses we owned. He basically ignored our children, even though I tried to speak with him, telling him that they would be harmed by his emotional distance. He did not care to listen and brushed me off.

Almost all of my efforts seemed to be wasted on him. This happens very often in abusive relationships...the abuser is never really satisfied. He would criticize and downgrade me often, and I began to feel worthless. I had no self-esteem as a result.

Like so many abusers, he was very polite and good-mannered to others. Family, business associates, friends at church... they were completely oblivious to his abusive ways. He had developed a charming persona that he could control at will, that he could switch on and off like a light bulb, and he especially liked to play up this persona in church. He had a dark and angry side that he did not display to others.

For brief periods over that long marriage I went to several counsellors for "depression" but I didn't mention my husband's abuse, so the counsellors were not able to help me. This shows how blinded I was to his abuse. I descended ever more deeply into the abyss of despair and self-blame. Several years ago, I finally mentioned his physical abuse to a new counsellor. At the time I had not yet acknowledged his verbal and emotional abuse. The counsellor suggested I close my eyes and pretend I was on a beach somewhere with my abusive husband. I didn't retain that counsellor for long, either.

The author mentions the description of the Covert Abuser as "also being angry and hostile. However, they don't express anger in the pattern of the anger addict... they may be more inclined to develop long-range plans to control and manipulate their partners." How terribly true this was in my case.

The author also describes Denial as being "one of the most insidious categories of verbal abuse because it denies the reality of the partner." Again, completely true in my experience and I could not agree more.

In the months leading to the separation, he would become angry and ask why I married him. I would reply because I loved him very much. He would sneer and make a denigrating sound. This, I felt, was his covert way of turning around the usual "Why did I marry you" remark. I didn't ask him the same question. I was afraid of his response.

Another illustration of his type of abuse: Several years ago, he and I were having lunch at a restaurant. There was no argument involved, either beforehand or at the time (as if that should matter). I started choking on food stuck in my throat. He was sitting next to me, and made absolutely no effort to help me. He simply sat there while I was desperately trying to cough up the food, feeling I would die. Finally I managed to do so with no help from him.

After arriving home, I calmly asked him why he didn't help me. He muttered something like "I dunno," and appeared completely unconcerned about this incident. I felt he hated me so much that he wished I would die.

In the months before leaving, I had tried to talk with him, asking him to offer a heartfelt apology and seek help. He would become very angry and would refuse, blaming me instead.

The perpetrator of abuse ravages the soul, crushes the spirit and can ultimately murder the partner that is held in the abuser's grip. I'm a Man and This Book Saved My Spirit Too

I am a man who didn't find the information in this book biased towards woman in the slightest. By the end of the first chapter I was swapping the gender of the pronouns without conscious thought. This book is about recognizing and responding to abuse. Regardless of gender, people in abusive relationships have been systematically trained not to trust their own inner voice. Criticizing this book seems to risk further befuddled those that need it most. I think the lack of sensitivity to this possibility on behalf of the critical reviewers suggests that either they don't fully understand the dynamics of abuse, or else they DO understand the dynamics and want the potential purchasers of this book to keep doubting their inner voices.

To address the issue of gender it might be useful to add a chapter of research on how verbally abusive women differ from their male counterparts, as well as how male victims differ from female victims. As a man trapped in an abusive relationship for 20 years I can make an educated guess that there are some significant differences. For instance since men are often not as in touch with their own emotions as women are, and because the stereotypical male prototype is John Wayne, I would guess that many men silently suffer abuse right to their grave. It would be a worthwhile chapter if it helps just one male victim to begin trusting his inner voice.

Would be 5 stars, but imho dangerous advice

This book would have merited 5 stars except for one major issue. The author does an OUTSTANDING job picking apart the confusing, tangled web that chronic verbal abuse creates. Being the partner of an abusive spouse, and having no prior experience to abuse, I had absolutely no idea that my plummeting self esteem, my feelings of total overwhelming confusion, were the result of verbal abuse. I, like most people, I imagine, assumed that "verbal abuse" was someone calling you a terrible name.

I did not know about gaslighting.

Had I known, and recognized the verbal abuse for what it was, I would have also understood that abuse tends to escalate. I might have been long gone before my spouse ever got the chance to put his hands on me. So to that end, I wish I would have read this book many months ago.

My 3 star rating stems from the last quarter of the book, in which the author discusses how one ought to respond to the verbal abuse once she's recognized it: "Stop it! Don't talk to me like that! Look at me! Nonsense! Why did you say?" This is dangerous. Dangerous and ill advised. The author lost me completely with that. Apparently, she recommends that approach as kind of a way to test the severity of the problem: answering back in this way might surprise the abusive partner into "snapping out of it". Another suggestion the author makes is to tape record the abusive partner, the idea being that if he/she objects, he/she knows that what they are doing is wrong. I don't want to assume that all verbal abusers are going to some point escalate into physical abusers. But the strong possibility exists. There is an undeniable liklihood that to an angry and controlling partner, any or all of the above responses will be viewed as complete outrageous defiance. And they will feel perfectly entitled to their reaction to this defiant new you, which will involve punishment.

Patricia Evans, thank you. But readers, do yourself a favor. When the realization of what your partner is doing to you dawns, don't risk your personal safety by confronting them. Get your exit strategy in order. Don't wait.

It is definitely a good textbook for technical analysis course. In fact, I have been using it for my class. In particular, it covers the application of wavelets in forecasting, a good tool for good math students. In the coming editions, the authors may consider the possibility of adding a few questions/exercises at the end of each chapter.

About the Author

Arthur Vincie has over fifteen years of film and television production experience as a line producer, producer, and director. Vincie has line produced or production managed numerous independent films and is very active in the New York City independent filmmaking community. He has done production work for major television networks, including NBC, ABC, and BBC America. He founded and currently runs Chaotic Sequence Inc., a company that produces shorts and features. He recently wrote and directed the feature film Found in Time, which won the Best Sci-Fi Feature at the 2012 Shriekfest Sci-Fi/Horror film festival.

a smart buy

as a producer of indie films, i can tell you that pre-production can really make or break a project. if you are organized during pre-pro, then your cast, crew, locations and vendors will make life easier for you during production, you won't have as many fires to put out, and you will have a much better shot at getting what you need on set and completing on schedule and on budget. a book like this has been needed for a long time -- one that gives you the tools you need - including paperwork and forms - to get your act together and instill confidence in your cast and crew. considering how many production books are out there and the fact that your time and funds are limited, you'd be smart to buy this process-oriented book and get moving on your project.

I am a NY filmmaker too. I Can tell with certainty that this book knows what its talking about. If you have an idea, these days the best thing you can so it just try to go out and make it. Just do it. This book will be a great tool to help you get ready.

I recommend this book to any filmmaker thinking of making an independent feature. Having heard Arthur Vincie speak in person about the process he goes through when he produces, writes and directs his own movies, I was looking forward to reading it, with the hope that it would contain the same incredibly useful information I've heard him discuss in person. It does, covering every step of the process in detail, from scripting and pre-production, through production and distribution. And, while there are other books on the subject available, what sets this one apart is how well it explains the balance between the artistic process the writer/director goes through, and the practical decisions the producer has to consider, especially when working low budget. Vincie shows how the two effect each other and then offers a lot of creative solutions for dealing with limited resources without compromising your artistic vision.
