About the Author
John Davidson has had a life-long interest in mysticism. Graduating in 1966 from Cambridge University with an honours degree in natural sciences, he took a post at the Uni-versity's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, where he worked for seventeen years. In 1984, he left the University to pursue independent interests and since then has written a number of books, including a series on science and mysticism and the ground-breaking work, The Gospel of Jesus - In Search of His Original Teachings. A life-changing book for the truly faithful

John Davidson has presented a masterpiece that illuminates the Truth about Jesus' message. For many Christians this book will be a bitter and perhaps impossible pill to swallow. For many others who are still seeking Truth, yet are disillusioned with Christianity, this book will change you. Either way it is a must read.
Every Christian, I believe, is at some time in their life confused about the apparent irregularities in the bible. Why, for example, are events described differently in the four gospels when they were reputedly written by the apostles? Why are whole phrases repeated word for word when they were written independently?
Similarly, every Christian must repress feelings of confusion about the morality of the bible. How, for example can the Lord Jesus (who the gospels describe as the "Lamb of God", and who taught that "blessed are the meek") be the Son of a jealous Father, who because the people of Jericho were enemies of his "chosen people" and followed another religion, ordered the the people of Israel to massacre every man, woman, child and baby, as well as every living thing, after the sacking of the city? Was this not genocide? Is it enough to say that only God can understand why these things had to be?
For myself personally, I could never reconcile the simple and pure words of Jesus as recorded in the Bible with the great complexity and opaque teachings of Christianity as given by the church. Whereas I completely believed Jesus, I could never find him in my pentecostal church, where brothers and sisters, it was believed, gave utterance to the Holy Spirit Himself. There were endless prophecies, and visions of all kinds relaid. The pastor, apparently under the power of the Holy Spirit, interpreted the scriptures week after week. In the end, as in most churches, there was no light, but only more division. Nobody could agree about what the Lord wanted. Yet all considered that God had shown them with His 'still small voice'.
If the Bible was the ordained living Word of God, why was it taking so long for people to imbibe its teachings? Why was there, after 2000 years, still so much confusion? Of course there are always pat answers for such questions given by well intentioned church leaders.Usually accompanied with a stern warning not to allow satan to enter the mind by questioning or 'testing' God. But, as Davidson says, is ignorance really a strong basis for faith?
In reality, as John Davidson reveals, the Bible is not the Living Word of God, but simply a document that has numerous unknown authors, with varying agendas, that became the manifesto of a world religion.
'The Gospel of Jesus' is a well researched, beautifully written and scholarly work that reveals just how so much confusion exists in the Christian church.It reveals the true teachings of Jesus. It delineates the Path,the Logos, the Way that Jesus spoke of, revealed in numerous manuscript sources aside from those that were destroyed by the orthidox church, in its determined effort to define Christianity by its own mold.
Davidson's book is uplifting. While it breaks apart any notion that the bible is the Living Word of God, it reveals the mystical teachings of the Word, the Logos, which was given by Jesus and by Mystics in all ages and regions, and was therefore not only known to the early Christians but to many ancient peoples. The Mandeans, a society from southern Iraq, for example, in who's scriptures and hymns is repeated the mystical message that Jesus brought to those who would listen and follow, and yet who defined themselves not as descendants of the followers of Jesus, but as the descendants of followers of John the Baptist!
It offers hope to all seekers of truth. The True Word that was in the world since the beginning and was revealed by mystics of old is available through mystics of all ages. As Jesus said, 'Seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened'.

Remarkable Scholarship and Insight

In this book a professional scientist writes about religion, specifically, about Jesus. It is a spectacular accomplishment, totally honest in its outlook and impressively comprehensive in its scholarship.

I must admit that I am only halfway through its thousand pages. I am not reading it rapidly, but am annotating the margins of each page, in ink! It may take me the rest of my life to finish it (I am 77 and I read it only on Sundays for an hour or two), but already I know that I will never find a more scholarly and insightful work which honestly seeks to discern the true character of Jesus.

[Note added on April 22, 2012: I am now 87, and I finished reading this book years ago. I am now rereading it, and appreciating it even more for its incomparable scholarship and insight!]

Perhaps because I share the same scientific temperament as the author, we have a common bond that unconsciously brings us together. Davidson has studied and written exactly as I would like to, provided I could commit myself to devoting the immense amount of time and energy to meticulous scholarship, as he had done.

In this book the character of Jesus is incomparably broadened and sharpened by bringing in many sources that were ignored by the political and administrative forces that finally determined the content of the New Testament. There are hundreds of lengthy quotations about Jesus from over three hundred sources that were written in the first five centuries after his death. Furthermore, each quotation is rephrased by the author for further clarification.

Here is an example: "Jesus said, 'If the flesh came into being because of the spirit, it is a wonder. But if spirit came into being because of the body, it is a wonder of wonders. Indeed, I am amazed at how this great wealth has made its home in this poverty.'" This is quoted by Davidson from the Gospel of Thomas which is rejected by fathers of the Christian Church, for it suggests that the soul may have derived and evolved from its life in the body, rather than vice versa. I find that "twist" fascinating!

Frankly, I find it difficult to believe that the historical Jesus actually spoke this thought, but somehow it does not matter. The Bible is a collection of many noble, and some not so noble, thoughts of human beings, but it has been edited for "proper" content by many biased editors with tunnel vision.

In this book many insights are given that point toward the existence and the character of the divine in human life. And I find them inspiring! Nowhere else have I found any writing on religion that approaches the dedication and illumination of this book. Page after page I am enthralled by my introduction to many obscure and unknown writers who, in their admiration for Jesus, have put their inspired words into his mouth in much the same way as the New Testament writers have done.

It is clear that I cannot praise this book enough. However, it is written for the seeker, not for the believer.

Jesus True Teachings Revealed by a Mystic

John Davidson has written a masterpiece on the esoteric meanings and mystical teachings of Jesus in the Gospels of the New Testament. Only a fellow soul on the spiritual path could reveal and convey the real meaning of the Gospel of Jesus as it was truly intended. Mr. Davidson illuminates not only the New Testament but other important spiritual and mystical writings and mystic teachers throughout the ages (Mandatory reading for everyone, not just Christians, scholars/historians of the Bible, and mystics). ...
When the inner esoteric meaning of the Gospel of Jesus is revealed to the reader by Mr Davidson (a mystic), profound revelation will be the result. Most books on the Gospels/Jesus are written by scholars with little spiritual awakening and acumen, and hence scholarly and sectarian dogma results with little understanding of true spirituality.
The only two caveats of Mr. Davidson when reading this book are, that he is an avid vegetarian and proponent of Gurus/teachers to help guide us (no doubt from eastern teachers influences on him). Further study of true mysticism without sectarianism for readers on the spiritual path is the Rosicrucian organisation AMORC, which is whole-heartedly recommended.

Belverd E. Needles, Jr., received his BBA and MBA degrees from Texas Tech University and his PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing at DePaul University, where he is an internationally recognized expert in international accounting and education. He has published in leading journals and is the author or editor of more than 20 books and monographs. His current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. His textbooks are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including (in 2008) the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. Active in many academic and professional organizations, he is immediate past vice president-education of the American Accounting Association. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech University, the Illinois CPA Society Outstanding Educator Award and its Life-Time Achievement Award, the Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Award of Merit from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the Ledger & Quill Award of Merit, and the Ledger & Quill Teaching Excellence Award. About the Author
Bernice Morgan was born in preconfederate Newfoundland. She has worked for many years in public relations, first with Memorial University of Newfoundland, and later with Newfoundland Teachers’ Association. Many of her short stories have been published in small magazines, anthologies and school textbooks. The mother of two daughters and a son, she lives in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Random Passage, the 4-part television mini-series, based on her book, aired on CBC Television, beginning January 27, 2002.

Engrossing Historical Fiction of Newfoundland.

What a wonderful, interesting story. The characters came to life. I couldn't put this book down & was living the story of their difficult struggle to surive the harsh winters. As a native Newfoundlander, I feel this story realistically portrays living in the fishing outports in earlier days. The accurate depiction of early Newfoundland settlement will be good to see in the mini series that has been filmed. I hope that we will get to see it in the U.S.A. I can't wait to read the sequel, "Waiting For Time."

I felt literally transported in time - I was on the Cape

Wow! I know the early history of Newfoundland and this books reads more like fact than fiction. What a wonderful book? I felt like I was actually present as I read this book. The characters and the place are SO REAL. I am so happy I bought the sequel "Waiting for Time". Random Passage is so great though I am afraid I will be disappointed ..as the sequel can't possible get any better than this. Ms. Morgan is to be commended. I understand this is her first novel.

Fascinating and compelling story

What a page-turner! I was so engrossed that I couldn't wait to read what turn of events would come next. It is difficult to imagine being such pioneers but Morgan's writing made you feel their joys and pain deeply. I am looking forward to reading Waiting for Time.

The Digital World Values Analog More Than Anyone

There are some surprising facts in THE REVENGE OF ANALOG. I admit I was very skeptical of the author's claim that independent bookstores are actually making a comeback. So I checked the facts, and sure enough, the author is correct--these stores are indeed increasing!

The author points out that online book sales have tremendously expanded-- but amazingly, the huge expansion has NOT been huge profits. That is, they "fail at the one thing they’re supposed to do." The author is right to point out this amazing contradiction. In fact, Amazon's book business is only slight profitable--and that recently. I confess I never really saw that issue before.

The author points out that vinyl records have also made an amazing comeback. Everyone thought they were dead. However, in 2015, vinyl sales became a big deal. Why? The author suggests this: "Because consumers spend money to acquire them, they gain a genuine sense of ownership over the music, which translates into pride. That’s cool."

Board games are another booming area that is primarily analog. In board games, one board game in particular has changed the game landscape--the wildly popular, "Settlers of Catan, invented by a German dental technician. In our family, my daughters and their friends were obsessed with this game.

My favorite area of this book are the chapters on education, and how digital has not really helped schools much.
The great hopes have largely not been realized, despite millions--and sometimes BILLIONS of dollars spent. (I recall seeing in the news a billion dollars spent in the Los Angeles School District. I wondered at the time if that was really a wise expenditure.)

Despite the great claims for digital learning, the author notes that even the most sophisticated digital devices offer less actual learning than the simplest of tools: "Even the best educational computer programs and games, devised with the help of the best educators, contain a tiny fraction of the outcomes of a single child equipped with a crayon and paper." Studies show that this mass distribution of computers have not lived up to the promises. The Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development concluded that students often do WORSE in most learning situations, and that "technology did nothing to improve scores across subjects."

Digital devices in many cases don't actually offer any substantial improvement--it's just a different format. The computers look cool, but "often just provide distractions."

Some of the richest companies on Earth are actually the biggest fans of analog. The author cites Yelp, for example. The company common areas are filled with whiteboards--not digital screens. This strikes the author as ironic: "Surely one of the leading technology companies in the world could afford the latest digital smart boards."

Yelp also realizes the important of a physical presence in their user base. Yelp runs parties and dinners for the "Yelp Elites." These are like the "Marines" driving the Yelp business. "Elites are selected for their dedication and enthusiasm."

Finally, the author reminisces about his childhood visiting "Camp Walden." The author cites this camp as a place that realize the limitations of digital. The camp now has a strict technology policy. The camp leaders want to develop social skills, not computer skills: “We look at the heart of what we do, and it is interpersonal relationships." If something doesn't help interpersonal relationships--it's out: "We want campers to experience nature with all their senses, and engage directly with each other without the separation of a screen."

All in all, I found THE REVENGE OF ANALOG to be an interesting read, with lots of surprising information. I would never have believed that the independent bookstore was making a comeback. Well, now I know. I especially appreciate the author pointing out how digital devices often impede good social interaction.

Let's have both- tech & analog.

I love reading what is happening in the tech world. I think we can have both tech & analog. Apparently so do many other people. Thank goodness I saved my vinyls. I never bought a Kindle & I ordered a Moleskin on line. A good read, enjoy the best of both worlds.

Fascinating Counter-thinking about the Digital Era

This is one of those books I find myself recommending over and over to friends and acquaintances--heck, even to near-strangers. It's a fascinating thesis and provocative insight into what experiences human beings crave and are rewarded by. One of the sticky passages: the author's observation about how much more sensory learning a two year old gains from finger painting with actual finger paints--which of course end up dripping down her arm, in her hair, on the dog, and occasionally on the paper--than from drawing on an Ipad. That and the concept of "finishability" which explains why it's so much more satisfying to read an actual book (or, get this, an actual newspaper) than reading the same content online in a never-ending trip down the rabbit hole of the internet. Nothing like the satisfying feeling of reading a good book to its end notes. That certainly goes for this one.

Book Review - Implementing Splunk

I was excited to hear the news that Packt Publishing([...]) were releasing a new book dedicated to Splunk called "Implementing Splunk - Big Data Reporting and Development for Operation Intelligence" ([...] A majority of the documentation and information on Splunk has been produced by Splunk so I was eager to see if "Implementing Splunk" was going to be a fresh take on the large amount of information that is currently out there. "Implementing Splunk" was written by Vincent Bumgarner who has been designing software for close to 20 years and has been working with Splunk from 2007, and has been helping companies use the application as a Business Intelligence, Reporting and Analytics Tool.

The book starts by taking the user through the web interface and providing an explanation on how different parts of the interface work. It then provides new users with a further and more thorough explanation on the specifics of Search, Charting and creating Dashboards, providing examples and samples along the way. The intensity of the information then increases with an explanation on Advanced Searching, Extending Search capabilities, working with Apps and Advanced XML Dashboards. The final three chapters of the book then cover Configuration, Administration and Deployment of Splunk.

I have found "Implementing Splunk" covers the basic elements of Splunk very well, providing clear definitions and examples. The first few chapters are provided by not overloading the user with too much information on how the interface is setup and how splunk works. These opening chapters of the book reach a good balance of information and examples that the user can start to test the interface with. It even provides some clear information on how Splunk works under the hood including an explanation on how Splunk deals with time. As you work with Splunk you begin to learn that search is the base of everything and as a result is covered in great detail.
The main complaint that I always hear about Splunk is that the documentation provided is not very clear, providing too much content that becomes vague and confusing. Unfortunately, as the book tries to cover more advanced topics it does the same thing. It seems to overload the reader with text and tries to cover too much information in one book. It is also difficult to use as a reference book, for example, when Chapter 12 provides examples on "Writing a scripted input to gather data"(Page 381), it stops at advising where the configuration files need to be located and then requests that you read Chapter 11 for further information.

The math concerning Index Sizing in Chapter 11(Page 355) is also vague and unclear, with the formulas jumping around between Gigabytes and Megabytes. The book also does not cover Version 5 of Splunk either, which although is not a major issue, I am not sure why the book was not amended to be as up to date as possible upon release. I also think new users could benefit from a little more information as to why you would be using Splunk, with an outline of the kind of data that Splunk works best with and how Splunk can make sense of it. A more thorough explanation of deployments with some examples provided could have also clarified some of the information in the later chapters.

I almost think that this book tried to cover too many topics with the authors attempting to condense things down to under 500 pages. It seems like it could have been split into two separate books, one outlining the search, dashboard, and user interface capabilities of the application, while the other focused on the administration, deployment and configuration. Either way the fact that this book was published highlights the growing popularity of the application within the enterprise environment. Even though I am worried that new users might get frustrated with the later chapters of the book, it does provide a great introduction to Splunk and is a good resource to get started with.

There are not many books on splunk. This book will help you to understand how splunk is used and how queries are

Well done!

March 2015: update - I originally gave this book 5 stars, and I love it still. But most technical books tend to age, and books about Splunk are not an exception. Two years on, I would say that the parts of the book that deal with searching are still relevant and interesting. And if you have a need to learn Splunk's Advanced XML, this is a great source. That said, most new users of Splunk will never need to use Advanced XML. The Splunk administration interface has been significantly updated and simplified in the last two years.

As a Splunk employee, I consider myself pretty knowledgable, especially about the search language. I found a number of mind-expanding ideas in this book, as well as a solid explanation of the basics.

If this seems a bit advanced for you, do try out the examples in the book. And perhaps David Carasso's book, Exploring Splunk (also available from Amazon) would be helpful, too.

In this revised edition of his 1979 classic Political Theory and International Relations, Charles Beitz rejects two highly influential conceptions of international theory as empirically inaccurate and theoretically misleading. In one, international relations is a Hobbesian state of nature in which moral judgments are entirely inappropriate, and in the other, states are analogous to persons in domestic society in having rights of autonomy that insulate them from external moral assessment and political interference. Beitz postulates that a theory of international politics should include a revised principle of state autonomy based on the justice of a state's domestic institutions, and a principle of international distributive justice to establish a fair division of resources and wealth among persons situated in diverse national societies.

good and bad

This book is now a bit out of date, but is still worth reading. It was something of a ground-breaking book when it was published (early 80's) but now seems somewhat simple compared to more sophisticated treatments of the same problems. These later books, however, largely build from Beitz, so this criticism should be taken in this light. The attack on "Realism" is the best part of the book. The attacks on nationalism and communitarianism are also worth-while though the positive theory offered in their place is clearly under-theorized and not, I think, satisfactory in the end. The worst part of the book is the attempt to "globalize" Rawls in a way that clearly doesn't work and shows a pretty serious (though very common) misunderstanding of what Rawls is up to. Finally, the almost total lack of discussion of problems relating to democracy, self-determination, and legitimacy is pretty surprising and a serious short-comming. It's worth reading the book (it's an enjoyable read) but the short-commings should be kept in mind.

Actually Beitz isn't a communitarian (Walzer is); he's a cosmopolitan. He argues against communitarians (he calls them "morality of states" theorists). But anyway I agree with the first reviewer--this book is great!! Beitz presents an airtight argument, adressing counter arguments on all levels. Although I don't entirely agree with Beitz, his argument is compelling--read this book with Walzer to contrast the perspectives.

This book is as good, if not better than the "making of" book for the first Jurassic Park Movie. It's filled with great pictures, and stories of preproduction, and production. If you want a good look behind the scenes, this is what you'll want!

If you're a fan of Jurassic Park, or how movies are made in general, you'd really dig this. I purchased a copy several years ago, when I was on a Jurassic Park binge. It is chock full of information on how the second Jurassic Park film was made, from conception to the final cut. It is a really neat book to read and it details just about everything you could think of. Filled with probably a couple hundred pictures, and they're all neatly labeled. My only gripe is that this book is a bit shorter and smaller in size than the first "Making Of..." book, published to accompany the first movie. Other than that, it is a great read if you can find a cheap copy.
