About the Author

Jim Burtles, KLJ, MMLJ, FBCI, is a highly regarded global leader and practitioner in the Business Continuity profession with over 35 years of experience spread across 24 countries. He is also the author of Principles and Practice of Business Continuity: Tools and Techniques and is working on a Second Edition due for publication in early 2015.
Burtles was one of founders of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and in 2001 his peers presented him with BCI's Lifetime Achievement Award. In his work as BCI's Standards Officer, Burtles was heavily involved in the evolution of its professional standards and ethics. As an honorary fellow he now serves on the Global Membership Council representing the interests of the worldwide membership.
He received the Freedom of the City of London in 1992. In 2005 was granted the rank of a Knight of Grace in the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, an ancient charitable body concerned with the treatment of skin diseases.
Burtles' first involvement with disaster recovery was in 1974 as a field engineer responsible for repairing and recovering a critical banking system struck by lightning. He went on to become IBM's disaster recovery country specialist before joining a disaster recovery service as their principal emergency management consultant in 1987.
In 2001 he set out on his own as the principal of Total Continuity Management, where he now focuses on executive level training and the development of specialist emergency response skills.
Throughout all these years he tended to specialize in serving the personal needs of those involved in emergency situations. He trained and served as a trauma counselor before developing a counseling technique aimed at helping the victims of disaster-related trauma. This was published in 1998 as A Counselor s Guide to the Restabilization Process. His practical experience includes hands-on recovery work with victims of such violent events as riots, bombings, earthquakes, storms, and fires. This includes technical assistance and support in 90-odd disasters, as well as advice and guidance for clients in over 200 emergency situations.
Through his activities as a trainer and consultant, he has helped to introduce the personal aspects of business continuity, emergency planning, and related disciplines into both the public and private sectors.

Business Continuity Planning at its best!

This book should be a staple in your library if you are responsible for business continuity and DR planning at your company. I was new to the field so I really appreciated how the book was layed out and how easy it was to transfer the information to my plan. There are a lot of applicable practices, tools, cheatsheets, etc that you can easily incorporate into your plan. I was very pleased with this book.

Jim Burtles is one of the business continuity professionals I most admire because of his long-standing commitment to the business continuity industry, and his extensive contributions to the profession over his broad career.

So, as a publisher (and as publisher of this book) I was thrilled when I first saw Jim's manuscript. There are not many people who could have written this book - and far fewer who could have written it nearly as well.

This book is an ideal combination of the practice of business continuity - standards, best practices, global perspective - and, the process of business continuity - planning, development, implementation, and so forth. Jim presents a clear picture of not just how to do what needs to be done, but why. By striking a balance between theory and practice, I believe Jim's approach makes the reader's job much easier and more effective.

There are other books on business continuity - I have edited or published many of them - but Jim Burtles' book is my favorite. With the included CD-ROM containing extensive tools and resources, this book is a no-brainer for anyone who wants to understand business continuity management, is about to embark on implementing a business continuity program, or is looking to bring an existing business continuity program up to world-class best practice.

Computational geometry as an area of research in its own right emerged in the early seventies of this century. Right from the beginning, it was obvious that strong connections of various kinds exist to questions studied in the considerably older field of combinatorial geometry. For example, the combinatorial structure of a geometric problem usually decides which algorithmic method solves the problem most efficiently. Furthermore, the analysis of an algorithm often requires a great deal of combinatorial knowledge. As it turns out, however, the connection between the two research areas commonly referred to as computa� tional geometry and combinatorial geometry is not as lop-sided as it appears. Indeed, the interest in computational issues in geometry gives a new and con� structive direction to the combinatorial study of geometry. It is the intention of this book to demonstrate that computational and com� binatorial investigations in geometry are doomed to profit from each other. To reach this goal, I designed this book to consist of three parts, acorn binatorial part, a computational part, and one that presents applications of the results of the first two parts. The choice of the topics covered in this book was guided by my attempt to describe the most fundamental algorithms in computational geometry that have an interesting combinatorial structure. In this early stage geometric transforms played an important role as they reveal connections between seemingly unrelated problems and thus help to structure the field.

Step by step, Emberley takes artists through the process, showing, for each picture, a fingerprint first, then adding simple lines and other fingerprints to make the print evolve into an entirely new entity. A mouse, for example, starts out as a brown oval fingerprint. Next, two pink fingertip-print ears are added. A black dot makes a nose. Two smaller dots become the eyes, and finally a few lines turn this blob into a bewhiskered mouse head. Kindergarten-Grade 3-A step-by-step approach to drawing for beginners and those who are artistically challenged. Each figure introduced can be made with a basic fingerprint or more, and then lines and dots are placed beneath the form to take budding artists to a complete picture. It is so easy to do that even very young children can enjoy a simple art adventure. A brief introduction refers readers to various ink pads, paints, and markers. Emberley also suggests using vegetables or gum-rubber erasers in addition to or instead of fingers. By dipping a finger into an ink pad, a basic form is made from which animals, bean buddies, clowns, and objects can be portrayed. The author then moves readers into general scenarios such as "The Garden" and "The Pond." He includes ways of showing emotions, holiday symbols, and a sketchbook full of supplemental ideas. The section devoted to advanced fingerprinting has slightly more difficult projects without step-by-step instructions. Emberley's books are especially valuable to nonartistic adults who want uncomplicated projects to do with children. This book is similar to Ed Emberley's Great Thumbprint Drawing Book (Little, Brown, 1977), but the addition of color fingerprints makes it visually more appealing.

easy to use

Amazon parents' reviews helped me choose this book, and I am glad I chose it. The major advantage is how easy it is to use. There are no words. You view a row of drawings in which you see the train developing; the first drawing has just the first two or three shapes of the train, and each followup drawing adds more shapes. There are no missing steps, and the train turns out looking like it's supposed to. I'm generally terrible at this kind of task and I found it easy. My son (almost 3, and train-crazy) and I sat down together to do this, and it held his interest for a relatively long period of time, I think in part because he understood how I was using the models in the book to make our sketch. The drawbacks are as follows. First, the drawings are relatively elaborate, with lots of tiny shapes to add. Though the task held my son's interest longer than I expected, it didn't hold his interest all the way through (though I have to say, I kept drawing and he kept looking back to see how I was doing, and he absolutely loved the finished product). The second drawback is that the trucks and trains in the book look relatively similar to each other. I have the feeling that I will memorize three or four and that will be the full use of the book. The third drawback is related to the main advantage of the book; this is a step by step recipe, and it isn't clear to me how I would go from copying to sitting down and drawing a train freehand, or to drawing something that is other than exactly what is shown in the book. But in all, I highly recommend this book. My son loves to draw and loves watching people draw, but this wasn't something we could do together because all I know how to draw is a simple house. I've taken art classes before and I just don't have that talent. If I get enough of these books, and can memorize a few trucks, animals, and faces, then this opens up a new activity for us.

Great Gift for Creative Kids

I gifted a set of these Ed Emberley drawing guides to my 5 year old cousin (along with a sketchbook and some drawing utensils). He is very fascinated with art and loves the drawing books -- now he wants them all!

I no longer have to scramble to think of what to gift him on holidays, the answer is always another Emberley. At least until I run out of the series or he inevitably grows out of coloring.

I learned to draw all kinds of things when I checked these books out of the library as a kid; so they hold nostalgic value to me. I was very happy to pass it on to my young cousin.

My childhood favorite is now my childrens' favorite!

Ed Emberley is just fantastic. I had only one or two of his books as a child (30-ish years ago) and once I found out there were more, I bought everyone I could find. My girls really enjoy them (now almost teens). The step by step approach to taking shapes they're familiar with and putting them together to make such cute drawings helps them to branch out into drawings of their own. We leave notes for each other and put something we learned to draw from EE's books on the note - brightens everyone's day!
