Melusine the Serpent Goddess in A. S. Byatt's Possession and Mythology, by Gillian Alban

Gillian Alban meticulously pursues the Fairy Melusine snake-woman image through the plot and the poetry of A. S. Byatt's novel Possession, into medieval legend, and beyond into her antecedents in ancient myth. The book describes the erotically inspiring force of Melusine's love story and draws parallels with goddesses such as Lamia, Ishtar or Inanna, Isis, and Asherah. Mother, creator, and leader, the figure of Melusine was ultimately vilified and tellingly converted into the demon of patriarchal accounts, as seen in the examples of Lilith, Medusa, Scylla, and the serpent in the Garden. Alban deconstructs part of Genesis, including the roles of Adam and Eve and Cain's crime, and illuminates the Old Testament worship of the goddess Asherah alongside the male Yahweh. A forceful exploration of literature, history, and myth, this study sweeps away limiting assumptions about the female sex. Melusine the Serpent Goddess restores the dignity acknowledged to women of old, making a forceful statement about the power and creativity of women.

(3.5) Fascinating book about the myth of Melusine
By Kelly (Fantasy Literature)
This book presents itself as a scholarly look at the figure of Melusine, best-known as the mysterious heroine of a medieval French fairy tale, but with ties to major goddesses of the ancient world. The author focuses mainly on Melusine's story as presented in A.S. Byatt's novel _Possession_, but also ties in earlier versions of the tale and other modern novelizations.
Alban's thesis is that Melusine is a survival of the ancient Great Goddess. This book is at its best when comparing Melusine to various ancient goddesses. For example, Alban's comparison of Melusine and Medusa, both snake-ladies whom one could not gaze upon with impunity, is fascinating. Also mentioned is Melusine's similarity to Echidna, who like Melusine was a bearer of strange reptilian children. Alban also studies the figures of Eve, Lilith, Persephone, and many others. It's jaw-dropping, at least to a reader like me who is obsessed with the Melusine story, how many parallels there really are between her tale and the older myths.
The downfall of this book is its unquestioning embrace of the "prehistoric matriarchy" theory. No one really knows whether people in ancient times were peaceful, feminist, "gylanic" tribes worshipping a single Great Mother. The theory has not been disproven; however, it is far from proven. No one really knows. But I think this book would have come across as more scholarly if it had presented the matriarchy ideas as theory and not as fact.

Principles of Economics, by N. Gregory Mankiw

With its clear and engaging writing style, Principles of Economics (Sixth Edition) continues to be one of the most popular books on economics available today. Mankiw emphasizes material that you are likely to find interesting about the economy (particularly if you are studying economics for the first time), including real-life scenarios, useful facts, and the many ways economic concepts play a role in the decisions you make every day.
About This Edition

Principles of Economics (Sixth Edition) became a bestseller after its introduction and continues to be the most popular and widely used text in the economics classroom. Instructors found it the perfect complement to their teaching. A text by a superb writer and economist that stressed the most important concepts without overwhelming students with an excess of detail was a formula that was quickly imitated, but has yet to be matched. The sixth edition features a strong revision of content in all thirty-six chapters. Dozens of new applications emphasize the real-world relevance of economics for today's students through interesting news articles, realistic case studies, and engaging problems. The premier ancillary package is the most extensive in the industry, using a team of instructors and preparers who have been with the project since the first edition. The text material is again fully integrated into Aplia, the best-selling online homework solution.

"I have tried to put myself in the position of someone seeing economics for the first time. My goal is to emphasize the material that students should--and do--find interesting about the study of the economy." – N. Gregory Mankiw

Review
"I think it is more reader friendly than other texts. In addition, it uses both numeric and/or graphical examples, which is very useful for the students."

"We used to use Case and Fair's text. Mankiw seems to be a better text because it actually follows through with giving applications to what he includes in the book. For example, there is much better material in Mankiw about consumer surplus, producer surplus, government policies and interventions in the market."

"Very student friendly text. Makes economics easy to understand. Some of the other texts would take a lot of reading to explain an idea."

The best economics textbook for teaching, the best for learning
By Ron Cronovich
I have taught intro-level econ courses for 17 years, both at a large state university and a small liberal arts college. I have used 6 or 7 different books, and read many others (in search of the best examples and the best ways of explaining concepts to students). Mankiw's book is the one I like best, and the one my students like best: Every time I try a different book, I have my students fill out a survey about the book at the end of the semester, and I urge them to be brutally honest. They consistently give Mankiw the highest marks.

The writing in Mankiw is very clear. Economics can be an intimidating subject, both to 18-year-olds just out of high school who haven't learned good study habits yet, and to adult learners coming back to college for the first time in many years. Mankiw is gifted at explaining complex concepts in ways that are easy to understand, though he never talks down to his reader.

He uses lots of examples that are easy to relate to. For example, take comparative advantage, one of the most fundamental, important, and non-controversial lessons of economics. Mankiw introduces this concept by asking the question "Should Tom Brady mow his own lawn?" One of the best football players in the history of the game probably could mow his lawn more quickly than just about anyone, but it's obvious that he has far more lucrative ways of spending his time, so it is mutually beneficial for him to hire someone to cut his lawn - even if the person he hires isn't absolutely as efficient at lawn-cutting. This is exactly the idea of comparative advantage, and students "get it" so much better when they read Mankiw's explanation of it. Mankiw explains many other complicated concepts using simple, easy to understand parables and examples.

Mankiw also brings the concepts to life using tons of compelling real-world examples. For instance, the chapter "The Monetary System" explains bank balance sheets and the concept of leverage, and then uses these concepts to give the reader insight into the recent financial crisis: the defaults that started occurring when the housing bubble burst in 2007 had a much more devastating impact on the banking system precisely because banks were so highly leveraged; this also helps the reader understand the infamous "TARP" and Federal Reserve / Treasury Department efforts to inject capital into the banking system, and the debate over financial reform leading to the Dodd-Frank financial reform act.

The chapters are short enough to be read in one sitting. College students have many demands on their time. They are much more likely to read a chapter if it is 20 pages long and can be read in an hour than if it is 30 or 40 pages long and requires two hours. Mankiw achieves this partly with good, concise writing, and partly by limiting the topics he covers to what's essential, and cutting out the filler. He is a very good judge of picking just the right content to cover in each chapter to keep the chapters short and not overwhelming, and he's much better than most textbook authors at expressing concepts concisely.

An often-overlooked quality of textbooks is the design, layout, and use of color. The layout of Mankiw's book is clean and simple, with an effective use of color. Even the typeface and quality of the paper is better than many other books. Pick any 5 econ textbooks and open them, and Mankiw, to a random page. The difference is very clear - Mankiw's design and layout is calming, clean, and effective, while other books are cluttered and over-use different colors, which contributes to a sense of confusion and being overwhelming.

I know the book is expensive - most textbooks are. But I know this publisher and many of the people who work on this book. The publisher spares no expense in hiring the best people, from editors to layout design to accuracy checkers. They also invest massive resources into gathering highly detailed feedback from hundreds of users - professors and students; the author and editor and others spend very many hours pouring over this feedback and other information to continually improve the book. Yes, they are doing this because it is very lucrative. But they are also quite sincerely dedicated to making the best possible textbook they can.

Still not convinced? If you live near a major university and have some time, visit its bookstore and find the shelf with the economics textbooks. Chances are good that Mankiw is on the shelf (it is the #1 selling principles book). Pick up a copy, and a copy of a few other econ textbooks. Scan the contents for some topic you think is important - maybe supply and demand, or monetary policy and inflation, or whatever. Spend 5 minutes comparing Mankiw's discussion of that topic with other books' coverage of the same topic. Or, just trust me, I have done these comparisons before, on many topics, and I can tell you, Mankiw is the best book.

As good as a textbook on this subject gets
By J. Davis
Let's face it--an economics textbook is never going to be thrilling. I don't see kids putting down Harry Potter to read this. But if you have to read a economics texbook, this is the best one to get. Mankiw keeps it from being too stuffy with some fun anecdotes from popular culture--in an earlier version, Tiger Woods was used as an example to discuss comparative advantage; since his debauchery Mankiw has replaced him with Tom Brady. While the author is a staunch Republican--he was Bush's top adviser for a few years--there is no sign of partisanship or ideology in the book.

As a side note, Mankiw is accessible@ his Harvard e-mail address; he will answer questions sent. His blog is gregmankiw.blogspot.com

The Pax Britannica trilogy is Jan Morris's epic story of the British Empire from the accession of Queen Victoria to the death of Winston Churchill. It is a towering achievement: informative, accessible, entertaining and written with all her usual bravura. Heaven's Command, the first volume, takes us from the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1837 to the Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The story moves effortlessly across the world, from the English shores to Fiji, Zululand, the Canadian prairies and beyond. Totally gripping history! Here, it is presented in a comfortable 6 CD abridgement which retains the main elements of the tale.

This is the way to write and read history
By JAD
This is the way to write (and read) history. Morris gives us silly, sad and wonderful tales of real people whose characters enliven the shadow of Britain as cast across the world stage, lengthening as year succeeds to year.

This is the first of three volumes that cover the reign of Queen Victoria. We are treated to all of the stories of Empire, as the soldiers and sailors of the Queen spread out across the globe to forge a truly global sphere of influence.

History need not be dull, and Morris is proof. This and the other volumes in the trilogy are outstandingly fascinating. We are anywhere that the Sun Never Sets, among some of the most creative and eccentric people imaginable.

The entire trilogy is well worth your time and attention.

Best condensed narrative of the British Empire under Victoria
By V. Burgett
I thoroughly enjoyed Jan Morris' survey of the 19th century British Empire. Having studied this topic from numerous other sources and perspectives, I still found this to be a refreshing account, and one that tied numerous facets into a cohesive whole. While some might regard Morris as writing with too much of a pro-British bias, I did not find the lack of politically-correct 'empire-bashing' to be problematic. Indeed, Morris emphasizes the negative (and the ludicrous) right alongside the positive. In the few instances where the perspective is obviously skewed, the informed student of history can easily read between the lines. In short, for the curious, I recommend this as the finest single volume on this topic, both for its informative content and its exciting, engaging writing style. I look forward to reading more of Morris' works.

Fascinating!
By Michael Dolamore
I gave this 6 CD set a 5 star rating for its easy-flowing, fact-packed and totally informative content. I was never bored for an instant, though I was disappointed that it ended when it did, before the end of the century, but I knew that this was one of a trilogy. The writer, and reader, brings to life the many colourful and quite incredible personalities that appeared to abound in those days. There was also no bias towards imperialism, and indeed, at times, clearly made the case against it, such as his portrayal of Gladstone and his opinion. A great work for anyone interested in history of this period.

Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat, by Philip Lymbery

Farm animals have been disappearing from our fields as the production of food has become a global industry. We no longer know for certain what is entering the food chain and what we are eating – as the UK horsemeat scandal demonstrated. We are reaching a tipping point as the farming revolution threatens our countryside, health and the quality of our food wherever we live in the world.

* Our health is under threat: half of all antibiotics used worldwide (rising to 80 per cent in US) are routinely given to industrially farmed animals, contributing to the emergence of deadly antibiotic-resistant superbugs

* Wildlife is being systematically destroyed: bees are now trucked across the States (and even airfreighted from Australia) to pollinate the fruit trees in the vast orchards of California, where a chemical assault has decimated the wild insect population

* Cereals that could feed billions of people are being given to animals: soya and grain that could nourish the world's poorest, are now grown increasingly as animal fodder

Farmageddon is a fascinating and terrifying investigative journey behind the closed doors of a runaway industry across the world – from the UK, Europe and the USA, to China, Argentina, Peru and Mexico. It is both a wake-up call to change our current food production and eating practices and an attempt to find a way to a better farming future.

This eye-opening book, urging a massive rethink of how we raise livestock and how we feed the world, deserves global recognition Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall A devastating indictment of cheap meat and factory farming. Don't turn away: it demands reading and deserves the widest possible audience Joanna Lumley Offers the kind of realistic and compassionate solutions on which our prospects for a truly sustainable world depend Jonathon Porritt This incredibly important book should be read by anyone who cares about people, the planet, and particularly, animals Jilly Cooper Lymbery brings to this essential subject the perspective of a seasoned campaigner - he is informed enough to be appalled, and moderate enough to persuade us to take responsibility for the system that feeds us Guardian Book of the Week This meaty account makes a distinctive and important contribution, eschewing the narrowly domestic focus of many of its predecessors in favour of a global investigation ... An engaging read - and it also gives a full enough picture of the situation in the UK to preclude any smugness on the part of the British reader. Anyone after a realistic account of our global food chain, and the changes necessary for a sustainable future, will find much to get their teeth into here Felicity Cloake, New Statesman There's no end to techno-idiocy in pursuit of profit. But far more concerning is Lymbery's contention that the wastefulness of feeding human-edible plants and fish to animals is not just absurd but catastrophic. A review of Farmageddon by an animal welfare sspecialist
By John Moran
This is a very informative and readable book and provides an excellent insight into modern day intensive livestock production systems. It certainly provides much “food for thought” on how mankind has “gone off the rails” in their quest to develop systems to more economically feed the world on animal protein at the expense of animal well being. Unfortunately the text contains many emotive descriptions of modern day livestock production systems and this detracts from the book’s readability and “take home messages”.

The changes in the intensive farming of poultry (for meat as well as eggs) and of pigs (particularly pregnant and lactating sows) has led to drastic reductions in their welfare and that would not be disputed by any compassionate livestock producer. One could also agree with the authors regarding the reduced welfare of intensively, but poorly managed, lot fed beef cattle and dairy cows. However the management of milking cows can be such that their welfare is hardly compromised. Granted beef and dairy cattle, being ruminants have been traditionally provided with access to pastures thus adequate space to move around in and to harvest their own forages. When managed off pasture, rarely are lot fed beef cattle provided with facilities to lie down undisturbed. However, dairy cattle, both milking cows and young stock, can each be provided with a separate resting place with clean, soft bedding such that they can lie down for as long as they would when provided with free access to pasture. This will allow for the provision of all they require for their comfort and welfare. The provision of additional overnight space in the form of an outside sand or dirt yard will also allow them to display when they are on heat, this allowing them to be successfully inseminated as the now normal management of dairy cows, rather than be serviced by a bull.

Waste is a big problem in the USA (and elsewhere)
By Amazon Customer
Everyone should read this book...maybe people would be less wasteful if they did! Waste is a big problem in the USA (and elsewhere). Portion sizes are way to big in the USA, it is no wonder we have so many hugely obese people! Food and its production needs to be respected more, especially the animals that die so we can eat meat.... do not get me wrong I am not a vegetarian, but I respect the fact that an animal died... so I never waste meat, people who do, disrespect life and the fact that an animal died in order that they could have meat on their plate.... We all need to eat less... and care more! We and the planet would be a healthier place if that philosophy were to be implemented!

Learn Where Your Food Comes From
By E. Nering
This book does a wonderful job of describing farming methods over the entire globe as well as global methods of raising food for human consumption. This includes cattle, chickens and pigs. It is sure to make a vegetarian out of you. The statistics and brutality is incmprehensible and sobering. Definitely a must read.

"The Education of a Speculator offers plenty of insights into the way markets work, but the epiphanies are what a reader might expect from Lao-tzu rather than, say, Graham and Dodd." -Worth magazine

"With an original mind and an eclectic approach, Victor Niederhoffer takes the reader from Brighton Beach to Wall Street, visiting all stops of interest along the way. Amazon.com Review
What you typically hear about Victor Niederhoffer is that he trades for "the great Soros," that he doesn't wear shoes in his office, that the only newspaper he reads is the National Enquirer, and that a picture of the Titanic hangs in his office.

That's all true. But it's the logic behind the eccentricities that is the real story. The Education of a Speculator is a sojourn inside the one-of-a-kind mind of Victor Niederhoffer, a trader in commodities and a keen observer of life. He has trained himself to look at the world in a singular fashion: where the guy on the street sees opportunity, Niederhoffer has scoped out all the downsides and done the contrarian thinking necessary to turn a profit. Niederhoffer draws material from disciplines as varied as biology, music, cards, and sports. His book, written with humor and verve, offers readers a chance to see the world through his lenses. The result is a genuinely new perspective on life (unless you too happened to grow up a speculator). This is a terrific, rewarding book.

From Publishers Weekly
Spiked with irreverent, often self-deprecating humor, this rambling memoir by the head of Niederhoffer Investments, a top-ranked Wall Street commodities trading firm, is entertaining, outspoken and sometimes maddening. Born in Brooklyn in 1943, the author, who grew up playing stoop ball, applies his street smarts to the art of speculation as he distills lessons from handball, chess, checkers, gambling, poker and also tennis, which he played while attending Harvard. National men's squash champion for 10 years, he retired from the game on principle after he was denied membership in athletic clubs that excluded Jews. Sketching an eclectic history of forecasting techniques from ancient Greece's Delphic oracle to the Federal Reserve, Niederhoffer extrapolates from weather predicting and handicapping horse races to estimating price movements, and draws strained if intriguing parallels among sex, music and speculation. Finally, he turns to ecology for an "ecosystem model" of futures and foreign-exchange markets. Although he lays out no comprehensive system, his book is full of unconventional advice on what and when to buy and sell.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Niederhoffer, a friend of George Soros who was once voted best commodity trading advisor, shares what has made him a savvy, successful speculator. He writes that "Willie Sutton (yes, the bank robber) exemplified the rule that success in any endeavor requires single-minded attention to detail and total concentration." In this long but fascinating memoir, he discusses how he was influenced by sports in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of his youth (he was born in 1943) and how street games and racquet games (he was National Men's Squash Champion for ten years) helped form his talent for speculation. He then delves into the influence of history, sex, war, ecology, sports, music, and even the Delphic oracle on his speculation efforts?all of which require great concentration and attention to detail. However, apparent throughout is the influence of his own family history on his values and actions. Readers who enjoy biographies in general are in for a treat. Investors, especially those who are not familiar with speculation and commodities, are in for an "education," too.?Steven J. Mayover, Free Lib. of Philadelphia

Not enough about the markets
By Eric Wagner
This book is not about speculating at all. It is about how Victor plays checkers with a 90 year old, how to play squash, handball, tennis etc... Then if he wasn't talking about games he was talking about Brighton Beach, NY then about Artie (his dad). I am sure his dad was a great guy but I don't want to read about how his mother and father met and got married. Then every once in a while he will throw in something about the markets and some study that he has done. The studies and the text after them are really good if he would have stuck to that topic it would be a decent book.
Also it is very hard to read. In one paragrah he would be talking about his uncle Howie's strategy in handball and then burst right into speculating the next paragraph without really even trying to connect the two. When he does talk about trading he does talk about his losses which most authors don't and I found that refreshing. Overall though don't waste your money on this book. There are tons of other books much better about the markets and personal stories about speculating.

Stocks, commodoties and almost everything else
By Lleu Christopher
The Education of a Speculator is a long, sometimes meandering account of the life of speculator Victor Niederhoffer. There is no particular order to this book, at least that I could discern; Niederhoffer jumps from topic to topic, going backwards and forwards in time. The style is almost stream of consciousness, with the main subject of finance digressing into topics as diverse as biology, music and squash (the author is a serious player of squash and other racquet sports). In addition to Niederhoffer's unconventional style of writing, the book assumes a fairly high level of knowledge regarding financial markets. Those (such as this reviewer) who are not well versed in the kind of articles, charts and data found in the Wall Street Journal or Barron's will often find themselves in way over their heads. For all this, I still recommend The Education of a Speculator, even to people not especially interested in the world of investing. Victor Niederhoffer is what may be called a holistic or macro thinker; he could also be called a Renaissance man. He has knowledge of many subjects and sees the connecting links between all events, objects and disciplines. He may not be right about everything, but his perspective is always interesting, intelligent and original. He combines the streetwise instincts of Brooklyn, where he grew up, with the scholarly mindset of Harvard, where he both graduated from and taught. As for investing itself, Niederhoffer, like many speculators (at one point he describes the overlapping definitions of an investor, a speculator and a gambler), has had many ups and downs in his life. When this book was written, he was at the top of his game; shortly afterwards he was wiped out. That, of course, was several years ago and he is still active as a writer (he has recently written a new book) and investor. I have always been fascinated with the world of investing, especially the kind of volatile speculating engaged in by people like Niederhoffer. Even if you don't understand all the details and nuances, the book conveys the dangers and excitement of this unpredictable universe. The author has spent many years compiling and analyzing data concerning markets, and he discusses how difficult it is to make predictions based on past performance. It is easy to look at a chart and, after the fact, describe how stocks or commodities moved in a logical, predictable manner. Often when you try to apply any seemingly logical system using real money, the results are disastrous. Niederhoffer seems to conclude that markets are paradoxical -they are both logical and illogical; sometimes they follow patterns but sometimes they are chaotic. And, most importantly, we can never be sure when order or chaos will prevail. If there is one overall lesson we can take from The Education of a Speculator, it is probably something like this -reality is almost infinitely complex with every part connected to every other part, the whole thing organized by some vast pattern that can only occasionally be comprehended.

Certainly a Well Deserved Spot In Your Library
By P. Hamidi
As many already know, Niederhoffer has had quite a volatile, and highly publicized career as a speculator. But it is pure naivety and ignorance for people to brush his work off merely because of the two blow ups he had in his fund. In fact, if anything, these two events have, in my opinion, made Niederhoffer's perspective exponentially more valuable than most modern financial literature on the subject.

With that said, I must disagree with his view on statistical inference and its role in market speculation. Although statistical inference is valid as a data point, when one uses it as their primary and sole validation of any trade premise, the risk they expose themselves to is far too high. The foundation of his theories are based on using prior statistical probabilities to validate a trade. In other words, if the odds of a trade blowing up in your face are 1 in 1000, then it's a good trade. But if you don't consider what is going on in the macro environment, the overall sentiment of market participants, and other "subjective" data sets, then you risk exposing yourself to a situation where you make a massive long bet on the S&P futures at a time when the market is in a freefall because of some geo-political and/or financial event such as a Russian debt default, or Asian financial meltdown. This is the scenario that blew Niederhoffer up, but the interesting thing to note is that the "trade" itself had already caused significant loss in a prior event. So what does that tell you about statistical inference?

The value in this book is what you gain from his anectdotes and insights. Although he has a tendancy to go off on a tangent and lose you, if you can keep your focus, this book will provide you with invaluable insight into the mind of one of this generations most experienced market operators.

And his comparison of a classical symphony with the Japanese Yen is priceless, and can be worth the price of this book in itself.

I have personally read this book over 5 times by now, and I'm sure I'll read it again.

The Adventures of Pinocchio (Illustrated), by C. Collodi

The Adventures of Pinocchio is a novel for children by Italian author Carlo Collodi, written in Florence. The first half was originally a serial in 1881 and 1882, and then later completed as a book for children in February 1883. It is about the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio (pronounced [piˈnɔkkjo] in Italian), an animated marionette; and his poor father, a woodcarver named Geppetto. It is considered a classic of children's literature and has spawned many derivative works of art, such as Disney's 1940 animated movie of the same name, and commonplace ideas such as a liar's long nose.

From Publishers Weekly
Innocenti's luminous interpretation of Collodi's tale carves the action out of 19th century Italian landscapes. Clearly shown as a mocking marionette, this Pinocchio races through cobbled city scenes and then throws himself prostrate at the personor fairywhom he has most recently wronged by his hasty, thoughtless behavior. And when he becomes a real boy, the transformation is resounding: left slumped on a chair is the body of a puppet; readers may marvel that what lies so lifeless in that scene was the source of so much trouble earlier on. Enchantment reigns in the pictures, each a perfect elaboration of the text. Innocenti and Collodi are equally at home in a place where puppets have life beyond human hands, and where souls may die and live again, resurrected by the power of love. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up Librarians are often faced with the dilemma of adult patrons who frequently request this book for their children, expecting the Disney version, and, when given the original, reject it as too frightening. But the original version is filled with events which are considered frightening fare; it has frequent violent turns of fate and a jerky, wild plot. This newest version will probably come close to a happy medium between Pinocchio as he really is and as people want him to be. Both illustrations and text emphasize the buoyant, irresistible, and innocent verve of Pinocchio, who is never deterred by the often morbid events around him. The full-color illustrations, both full- and half-page, mostly feature Pinocchio, who here is a cute little marionette with a faint resemblance to his Disney doppelganger. The prose is conversational and would make a nice read-aloud choice. Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. This retelling of a classic story raises a question: does modernizing and truncating the story to popularize it, lose the essence and charm of the original? The answer, of course, is, "It depends on how it's done." The classic, illustrated by Attilio Mussino, is 310 pages. For his picture-book-size, 96-page version, the editors have cut episodes, minimized details, and abbreviated the dialogue. Eliminated are such elements as the Land of the Busy Bees and notes to the reader, and nicknames have been updated (the Lovely Maiden with Azure Hair is now the Blue Fairy). The emphasis is on the magical aspects of the tale, and the heavy moral tone of the original has been replaced by a more child-friendly approach. The new full-page, turn-of-the-century-style illustrations, in watercolor, ink, and paint wash, are lively, spirited, and appealing. Certainly, the editorial changes bring a smooth flow to the story, and the attractive new look, with large print, will entice the young audience to whom Pinocchio's escapades most appeal. Isn't that what retellings should do? Julie Cummins

Dont read the puppet version, read the Real Thing!
By Godly Gadfly
Of course you already know the story of Pinocchio, right? Who doesn't? Millions have been charmed by the story of the naughty puppet that wanted to become a real boy. His adventures are hardly new, as Pinocchio is in turn carved by Geppetto, rebellious against his father, disobedient to the good fairy, victimized at the hands of the deceitful cat and fox, changed into a donkey, rescued with his father in the whale, and eventually becomes a Real Boy.
But have you read the Original Pinocchio? Most people do not know that there are two versions of Pinocchio. One is the simplified version that Disney has given us, the version most people are familiar with. The other is The Real Thing, The Original. Along-side The Real Thing, the simplified Disney version is like Pinocchio the puppet - charming, but wooden and simple. The Real Thing, however, is like Pinocchio the real boy - charming, and full of life. This edition by Carlo Collodi is that Real Thing.
Although story of Pinocchio is a tale known to nearly every speaking child, it was first written in Italian. Written by Carlo Lorenzini under the pseudonym Carlo Collodi, it dates back to 1883, when it was serialized in a newspaper and then published as a book with huge success. The 1892 English version was equally well received, but it was the 1940 Walt Disney cartoon that gave Pinocchio the legendary status it enjoys today. Only one problem: Disney took short cuts. Collodi's original story has a richness and charm unmatched by Disney. Collodi's Pinocchio is not about a loveable puppet, but about a bratty puppet who needs to learn an important moral lesson about responsibility. And it resonates with slapstick humour that even Disney cannot equal.
Take the first paragraph: "There was once upon a time ... A king! My little readers will shout together. No, children, you make a mistake. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood." Collodi goes on to relate how this piece of wood is first owned by a carpenter called Mr. Antonio Cherry. When his friend Mr. Geppetto comes to visit, the wood causes a great fight between the two friends by talking and calling Geppetto his hated nickname of Polendina. Geppetto is convinced it is Antonio who is doing the name-calling: "They seized one another's wigs, and even hit and bit and scratched each other. At the end of the fight Geppetto's yellow wig was in Mr Antonio's hands, and the carpenter's grey wig between Geppetto's teeth. `Give me my wig!' said Mr Antonio. `You give me mine, and let us make a peace treaty!' So the two little old men, each taking his own wig, shook hands, and promised to be good friends forever." But moments later, the fighting and name calling resumes ("Blockhead!" "Donkey!" "Ugly monkey!". When peace is restored, with honours even, "they shook hands again, and vowed to be good friends for ever. Then Geppetto took the piece of wood and, thanking Mr Antonio, went limping home." And so that's how Geppetto ends up with the wood that later became Pinocchio.
This is just a small taste of the sparkling and rich humour that is largely absent from most contemporary renditions of this famous tale. Taking their cue from Disney, most modern stories have retained Collodi's story-line, but lost the delightful humour. The Original is darker in tone than the simplified version (assassins try to murder Pinocchio and leave him swinging from a tree, and Pinocchio's threatened punishment of death for failing to take his medicine is announced by the appearance of rabbit undertakers) , but also has a wealth more action, excitement, and humour. As long as you're only familiar with the simplified version of Pinocchio, you'll think of Pinocchio as a wooden and old story for little kids. But anyone who is familiar with The Real Thing, The Original by Carlo Collodi, knows that just like Pinocchio himself, the Real Pinocchio story is in the end no wooden puppet, but a living and breathing classic.

2005 revised unabridged edition illustrated by Innocenti
By Xtopher Xtopher
First off, to clear things up, this page contains a few reviews of other editions of Pinocchio, which should be seperated out by their proper ISBN numbers. This review refers to the 2005 hardcover from Creative Editions. This is a revised version, first published in 1998, this edition features a new translation of the full, unabridged text, more lyrical than some older translations, and quite faithful to the original Italian text. Also, this edition has several additional illustrations, and has been handsomely re-designed. Altogether, I find this to be my absolute favorite edition of Pinnocchio, and I even bought it again, to replace my much-loved earlier edition. I prefer the new translation to the older translation used before, and the addition of more illustrations and the re-design make this a superior edition.

I first found this book in a thrift store, and the inscription indicated it was a misguided gift to a young child from his grand-parents... Don't make this mistake, this version of Pinocchio is definitely not intended for young children. Parents may want to look elsewhere if they are expecting a tame children's book. This is a sophisticated and somewhat graphically illustrated edition, and it is not the Disney-fied version of Pinocchio that many people expect. If you are unfamiliar with the differences between the original story, and the popular sanitized versions, you might be shocked at first. The story is actually very dark, brutal, & surreal, and the illustrations of, say, Pinocchio getting hung in a tree, are really too dark for very young children.

That being said, I still whole-heartedly recommend this edition for older readers wanting an artistic and unexpurgated version of this incredible tale. This is one of the best modern translations of the text I've read, so I would recommend it to literature students and people interested in Italian folklore over most of the other versions available.

The artwork is what drew me to this book when I first saw it. You simply must see these illustrations to appreciate them. The detailed, large-scale, and subtlely colored drawings are a moody and perfect accompaniment to this version of the text. I pick this book up often, just to look at the amazing pictures and re-read some of my favorite parts.

Overall, I am thrilled with this revised edition of a book I already considered a classic among illustrated books. I recommend it to scholars of folklore, lovers of sophisticated illustrated books, and curious readers looking for a dark, surreal and wondrous book.

Rabbit Undertakers and a Dead Girl
By Gillian M. Kendall
This is not Disney's watered-down and water-logged *Pinocchio* -- this is the book that has the real stuff, and if children like the Disney movie, it's because they're getting a hint of the wonders of Collodi's book.
First: my five year old insisted I read this book to him twice in a row. Yes, I left out the part where Pinocchio actually bites off the paw of a cat and spits it out, but my boy revelled (from the safe distance of bed and sippy cup in hand) in the assassins who pursue Pinocchio, try to kill him, and leave him swinging from a tree. The incidents in this book are highly evocative: a little girl announces that all the people in a house are dead (she included); rabbit undertakers appear when Pinocchio won't take his medicine; Pinocchio is almost fried as a fish (and drowned, and hanged, etc.). There's a talking cricket, but he's annoying and, happily, does *not* burst into song.
Second: This book centers around dream-logic. The book makes mechanical gestures towards cause and effect, but it really works the way a child thinks and the way a child worries -- it reassures a child that not everything that happens is reasonable. Perhaps Collodi meant this book to be moralistic -- certainly there are lessons constantly to be learned. But that the least of this text: this is a story about a boy who can't quite be a boy because he's naughty and disobedient, and he finds it isn't easy *not* to be naughty. Grown-ups have all sorts of rules, and a lot of them don't make much sense. After all, we all come into this world not yet human, and we all struggle to figure out what is expected of us.
The illustrations are are pleasing and plentiful, and I know it will only be a matter of time before my five year old asks for the story again. I'll be glad to read it. The worth of the tale is far greater than the worth of the simple (but good) morals it contains.

A meaningful revision of a classic work
By Kevin Casey
I already owned and had read numerous times the original six volumes that this work is built from, so I wasn't sure if purchasing this one would have value to me beyond a collector's item. However, the author's introduction alone was very meaningful to me. Mr. Hayes' first book was written 34 years ago now, and the introduction provides his perspective on what has and hasn't changed in the world and in the art since he wrote it. As someone who aspires to not merely read about it but actually follow the path and example he has lived, it was invaluable for me to read about things from that bigger perspective.

There is also something meaningful about having such a hefty tome of wisdom in one place, with one table of contents and one index.

Lastly, I believe he has updated the language and descriptions of some things to how we talk about them now. This is definitely the place to go if you never read the original volumes, and it's worth a purchase and revisit if you did read them long ago.

I bought this book for the amount of information that it contains all in one volume. Not only is it full of information, it contains stories from the authors time training with Soke. All in all worth the money .

His previous books re-presented in one complete volume.
By Tom T.
When I was a teenager, Stephen Hayes was one of my martial arts heroes. Although I did not practice Ninjutsu, I had all of his books, and enjoyed reading them very much. I really enjoyed the spirit of martial arts that he presented in his books. This is the complete collection of all those previous books rebound and presented in one volume. Not a comprehensive presentation of the art, but rather it is a good introduction to Ninjutsu from the perspective one of the first Westerners to bring the art to the West.
