About the Author
Dr. Joseph D. Straubhaar is the Amon G. Carter Centennial Professor of Communication in the Radio-TV-Film Department and Latino Media Studies Director in the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. He previously served as Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies within the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies. Dr. Straubhaar has published books, articles, and essays on international communication, global media, digital inclusion, international telecommunications, Brazilian television, Latin American media, comparative analyses of new television technologies, media flow and culture, and other topics. His primary teaching, research, and writing interests include global media, international communication and cultural theory, the digital divide in the United States and other countries, and global television studies. In addition to his own research in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, Dr. Straubhaar has taken student groups to Latin America and Asia, and he has presented seminars abroad on media research, television programming strategies, and telecommunications privatization. Currently he serves on the editorial boards of COMMUNICATION THEORY, MEDIA INDUSTRIES, CHINESE JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION, JOURNAL OF LATIN AMERICAN COMMUNICATION RESEARCH, STUDIES IN LATIN AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, COMUNICACIÓN E CULTURA, and REVISTA INTERCOM. Dr. Robert LaRose is an Emeritus full professor in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. He was recently honored with the MSU William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award. Other accolades include the Outstanding Article Award of the Year in the field of communication from the International Communication Association and the McQuail Award for the Best Article Advancing Communication Theory from Amsterdam School of Communication Research for his 2010 paper "The Problem of Media Habits". Dr. LaRose conducts research on the uses and effects of the Internet and has published and presented numerous articles, essays, and book chapters on computer-mediated communication, social cognitive explanations of the Internet and its effects on behavior, understanding Internet usage, privacy, and more. Dr. Lucinda Davenport is the Director of the School of Journalism at Michigan State University, a nationally accredited program since 1949. She previously served as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, among other administrative positions. In addition to the Michigan State University Excellence in Teaching Award and the College of Communication Arts and Sciences Faculty Impact Award, she has earned national honors for her research, which focuses mainly on news media and innovative technology, media history, and journalistic ethics. Dr. Davenport has professional experience in newspaper, radio, television, public relations, and digital news, and she is known to be an innovator with digital news and journalism education. She earned her Ph.D. in mass communication from Ohio University, an MA in journalism from the University of Iowa, and a BA double major in journalism and Radio/TV/Film from Baylor University. Perfect.

Although this textbook was mandatory for my Media In Society class, it's a great way to learn about different media types and their affects on society. This is a wonderful textbook. It uses really current examples and teaches each media outlet first using chronological advancements then hits the more technical aspects. Really great for anyone looking to learn about media, communication studies, or even those just looking to learn more about technology.

Great textbook.

Required text for an Intro to Mass Media college course. This is one of the better textbooks I've had to use. Great layout and hierarchy make readability and learning easier. Good book to buy even if not required and you want to learn more about media and communications.

Love the book, now we have to see if it works!

I started reading it yesterday morning and finished last night, so easy to read and sounds like a perfect diet for me. I go between Paleo and eating right for the most part so it is not foreign to me. As with most diets, I hate the fact that I have to remember a list of what I can and cannot eat - but how else will it work, right? I am starting today so that I get to have a cheat day on Saturday. I have about 60 lbs to lose so I will check back within a month or two and update my review! Definitely a good read though, really enjoyed it - I didnt skip stuff like I usually do with diet books (I have read A LOT of diet books :-))

WILL TURN YOUR LIFE AROUND!

I went on this Diet Plan so that my husband would too, after he had 2 heart attacks and two stents for his heart. He is diabetic, formed a blood clot after heart surgery and was not expected to make it past the one year point. He found Dolvett's 3-1-2-1 Diet Plan super easy to follow along with his app to log what he is eating. He has now been on it 6 mo., has lost 42 pounds without feeling like he is suffering at all, and is off all insulin. And, this is without being able to exercise due to his blood clot.

I am not making up that when we went into his doctor for his check-up the doctor had tears in his eyes and said that all 3 doctors had discussed his case and did not feel that he would make it. He was shocked at my husband's turn around, because after his first two check-ups (before going on this plan) he had not improved at all. The starting of losing weight on this plan, the low carbs and fat, just turned him around. Now instead of making plans for his death, we are making future plans again. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE A FAKE TESTIMONIAL, BUT IT ISN'T!

I would advise 3-1-2-1 to anyone! It is easy, your not hungry, you don't feel deprived, and it can change your life.

An ocean of salt in one book

This has to be in the top 5 sea stories of all time. An absolutely incredible adventure. The story follows the adventures of the intrepid Count Felix von Luckner, who ran away to sea as a boy, and later became the scourge of the Atlantic, sinking enough allied tonnage that some ships refused to leave their ports. He did all of this without ever killing a single person and as far as I know he may be the only person to ever recieve the Iron Cross and a humanitarian award from the Pope. I am unsure as to this particular edition. I currently own two copies. One is a newer (2003?)edition and the other is an edition printed during the 1920s. I would advise anyone to take a gamble on an older printing of this book. The reason for this is that in the newer edition I have, many of the photos I have in the older edition are reproduced. The reproductions look as if they have been done on a photocopier. This doesn't detract anything from the story but it's a little irritating. Also some photos were ommitted altogether. I'm really fond of one photo in my print from the 20s that has the Count ripping a Munich phonebook in two with his hands (not so many phones back then but still impressive). This picture didn't even make the newer printing. There were also a whole series of pre-war pictures (such as one of him when he was a professional wrestler)that didn't make the cut either. So I'm guessing that a potential buyer might have more luck if they purchased an older copy. Of course if you really don't care about the photos, it's a mute point. Regardless, it's a great story. I've had to purchase a few copies as gifts to prove that I wasn't making it up.

I have loved this book since I was 12

By chance I found this book on top of my fifth grade classroom in the 50's--it was an autographed copy too. Wow. I have read and re-read the book over the years and I decided to add it to my Kindle collection. Extremely entertaining and just a good book to read about the sinking of enemy ships during WW1. This had a lot of pictures in it too. Well worth the money. I would have paid more, but then I was very familiar with the book since I also own the hardback version.

Fascinating tale of a gentleman pirate

Lowell Thomas met and became good friends with Count Felix von Luckner shortly after the end of WWI. Luckner's story so impressed Thomas that he translated the count's tale into English and introduced this seafaring German Robin Hood to a new audience in the United States. That Luckner became a celebrated hero here, as well as in Germany, speaks volumes to the character of Luckner himself as well as the fascinating tale of the last of the gentleman pirates of the tall ship era.

There are three versions of the Luckner tale available at Amazon. The Thomas book was the first I encountered but the best version is a later book by Blaine Pardoe (see my review of that book): The Cruise of the Sea Eagle

You can't really go wrong with any of the three U.S. versions - Thomas, Hoyt or Pardoe. They all have their own character and each has something the others don't. The Hoyt book has the best quality photographs - the Thomas book has the worst (hence the deduction of 1 star). If you're going to buy just one, get the Pardoe version - the best researched and the one that provides wonderful historical context absent in the other two. After you read one, I would encourage you to pick up the others to compare and contrast.

Josh Sugarmann is executive director of the Violence Policy Center (VPC), which he has headed since founding it in 1988. Prior to establishing the VPC, Mr. Sugarmann was a press officer in the national office of Amnesty International USA and the communications director for the National Coalition to Ban Handguns. Mr. Sugarmann's articles and op-eds have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Mother Jones, Rolling Stone, The Nation, and Washington Monthly. Anti NRA: always lies

Propaganda against the NRA without any facts. the NRA's actually just regular people, meet up with teachers, nurses, doctors, paramedics, firefighters, police and military and many others. The pro gun side is the only side is actually educated about the gun issue. Real compassionate for the victims of violence is doing what works. Restricting and disarming the good guys is the last thing you want to do. gun control laws have never helped and it's sad that the victim's families are being used as political pawns to push an agenda that will not help anyone. The NRA is fighting to actually help people defend themselves. criminals do not hate gun laws. gun laws support criminals.

Sorely wrong

I checked out this book hoping it would add to my history of gun culture and control. I found it to be out of step with much of the literature. Women and black Americans did not need NRA and the firearm industry to promote gun sales to them. The evidence shows that these groups had a cultural link to guns before the time period Sugarmann posits. Further, there wasn't any emphasis on the fact that the NRA has promoted gun control. This is a hit piece and should be read purely for enjoyment.

Dear fellow citizens,
When making a literary purchase, its a fundamental necessity to know who wrote it and their motivation to do so.
I applaud the honesty set forth in disclosing the authors back ground and agenda.

Now, I know I will only read this book while on loan from my public Library.

I wish to leave this item zero stars, as it simply a lobbyist peddling his own wares,(oh the irony here), but its impossible.

One star you'll receive and nothing more.

Do you like Penguins? Penguins can be very interesting. In Penguins there are lots of facts, some amazing facts are that some Penguins lay at lest 2 eggs and only one survives, a group of Penguins that live together is called a colony. There are 17 different species (kinds) of Penguins! The smallest Penguin is called the Fairy Penguin the biggest Penguin is the Emperor Penguin!
I like Penguins because it teaches me about their lives and what they look like. I love all of the Penguins because they are all unique and special.
I would recommend this book to people who like Penguins, animals, and facts!

I have owned - and read - this book for many years. For anyone who has had an interest in delving in to the world of theatre which is on the very edge of discovery, read this book. Take a group of ethnically diverse actors, a carpet, a pair of boots, a very rough idea and a collection of small African villages, some of whom have never encountered anyone from outside their own small community, and you have the perfect mix for rediscovering the true meaning of theatre. Charmian Carr played eldest von Trapp daughter Liesl in the mega-successful film version of The Sound of Music, and judging from her earnest memoir, the story's sentimental wholesomeness rubbed off on her permanently. It's a "great movie," she avers, acknowledging that the critics thought otherwise; she was "honored" to be part of it, and her onscreen siblings became her lifelong friends. Carr's reasonably interesting chronicle of shooting the film is interspersed with personal narratives by people who love it: a nine-year-old boy who found comforting parallels between the distant but ultimately loving Captain von Trapp and his own recently deceased father; a girl who got the video for Christmas just after her brother had surgery; and so on. The author tempers all that sweetness and light with frank accounts of her parents' divorce, her mother's alcoholism, and later conflicts with the studio over financial remuneration for promoting the movie. Adult costars Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews come across as consummate professionals less enthralled by the experience than their youthful supporting cast. But in general the book is determinedly upbeat and definitely not for the cynical. Those who share Carr's rapturous regard for The Sound of Music and even those who don't but are willing to be touched by sincere emotion will enjoy her stroll down memory lane. --Wendy Smith

Published to coincide with the 35th anniversary of The Sound of Music, this memoir by the actress who portrayed Liesl von Trapp offers a detailed account of the creation of the classic, which won five Academy Awards. Carr was 21 at the time she was chosen to play the 16-year-old daughter of Baron von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a wealthy widow who falls in love with a nun-cum-governess (Julie Andrews). Diehard fans of the tuneful romance may savor these somewhat dated anecdotes, such as the one about the day five-year-old Kym (who played Gretl von Trapp) nearly drowned during a shoot on an Austrian lake or how the famous opening shot of Andrews twirling in a meadow was captured by a camera man strapped to a helicopter. However, those who share Plummer's reputed opinion that the film lacks depth (he referred to the song "Edelweiss" as "boring, schmaltzy and trite") will find wading through this archival minutia tough slogging. One of the more interesting facts imparted in this otherwise syrupy account is the anger Carr and other cast members felt toward the studio, which took advantage of them by convincing them to do free promotion and to sign releases that prevented them from receiving any money generated by sales of the highly profitable sound track. It's difficult to believe that even the upcoming 35th anniversary of The Sound of Music could justify this memoir by the girl who played Liesl Von Trapp. The title is apt: although Carr gave up acting to marry a dentist not long after her debut, she doesn't seem to have gotten very far beyond this period of her life. She spends a lot of the book drawing parallels between the film and "life itself," telling her own story alongside the stories of others--she lets us know what happened to her former castmates (curiously, Julie Andrews is absent from her acknowledgments) and reprints testimonials from Sound of Music fans about how important this film was to their lives. A perhaps too-detailed look inside the making of The Sound of Music (there is a whole chapter on why Carr only likes dark chocolate), this is a fairly breathy puff piece. A marginal purchase.

Terrific "Sound of Music" book

Charmian Carr has written a lovely tribute to this movie, which is one of the great hits in the history of American film. It certainly has a special place in my life, as it has for almost 27 years.
Ms. Carr recognizes the adoration people have for this film, and she writes about it accordingly. What I think is special about her and her authorship of this book, is that she APPRECIATES her fans, fans of the movie, and is quick to acknowledge this in the narrative. I admire this tremendously. So many actors that appear in such a celebrated film shun fans and devotees and regard them as no doubt obsessive and looney. Charmian does none of this. She continously credits viewers of "Music" with its success.
This book is a leisurely read, easy to like, not too long and yet not too short. As a "Music" fan, I personally would have liked it longer, but nevertheless, it is a comprehensive account of one of the masterworks of film musicals.
Thank you, Charmian Carr, for being one of "My Favorite Things" for 35 years!

Great Read for TSOM Fans & "Behind the Scenes" Movie Buffs

A must read for lovers of the movie "Sound of Music". A must read for movie buffs with an interest in the "behind the scenes" of movie making. The book is very positive and uplifting - a much different tone than some other "behind the scenes" books; the tone is consistent with the tone of the movie itself. The book is very well written and has a good flow to it. It is important to note that the book is also a good book for younger fans of the movie.
The book is full of interesting material and anecdotes. It will enhance your viewing of the movie (can't wait for the DVD). It gives you things to look for in various scenes; for example, the ace bandage on Liesl's right ankle in her dance number with Rolf - read the book to find out why it's there.
Another reviewer remarked unfavorably on fan stories found in the book. I saw them as a positive addition in that they show what an impact a movie can make on a viewer's life. In the case of this movie, it was for good. We have all read news stories of other movies where the impact was not good.
BTW, I met Miss Carr at a book reading and signing in Sterling, VA. She is every bit as personable and attractive in person as she was as Liesl.

Essential Reading for Any "SOM" Fan

Worth the long wait (it has been advertised for months on this site), Charmian Carr's "Forever Liesl" seemlessly integrates several stories: a detailed narrative of the making of "SOM"; Ms. Carr's personal experience "being" Liesl and its impact on her life and family; the impact of the movie on her co-stars; the impact of the film on long-time fans. In fact, the variety of storylines makes for a book the interest level of which rarely flags. It is a tribute to Ms. Carr and co-author Jean Strauss that the variety makes for an organic whole, rather than just a jumble of parts. The well-organized structure of the book is, indeed, one of its strong points. This is not a mere collection of anecdotes.
The narrative of the making of "SOM" renders Julia Antopol Hirsch's ill-informed book on the same subject really irrelevant (though it has color pictures). Ms. Carr pointedly corrects several real untruths paraded by Ms. Hirsch as fact, though with characteristic class, she does not mention Ms. Hirsch or the book by name. Though she was an "SOM" insider, Ms. Carr was clearly scrupulous in her quest to get the story right, consulting archives and many of the surviving participants in the film's creation. It is a tribute to her generosity -- and seeming lack of ego -- that the book isn't just a self-centered recital of 35 year-old memories. Christopher Plummer's major contribution to the resulting book is clear, and certainly no other telling of the "SOM" story has captured his candor, wit and irreverance as this one has. No, Julie Andrews did not participate, but she is treated with the respect that her contribution to the film demands. Ms. Carr indulges in no show of pique at Ms. Andrew's current aloofness.
As interesting as is the "making of" narrative, Ms. Carr's own story packs more punch. The heart of this story is a series of "family matters," particularly those involving her parents. Not indulging in "Mommie Dearest" revenge, she narrates her parents's struggles with admirable restraint and good taste. The chapter on her mother's alcoholism is particularly moving and actually relevant, as she had a role in getting Ms.Carr an audition for the film. This later became a painful issue between mother and daughter. This chapter could have been maudlin, or melodramatic, or grossly self-serving. It is none of those. It is more touching because the narrative style in this section is so spare. In this case, less meant more (and more moving).
Where the book runs into trouble, however, is with Ms. Carr's shrewd, but less successful, tribute to the movie's many (obsessive?) fans. She is much too generous with space as she allows these fans to tell their stories. Its a strategically sound policy to play up to the fans, but the tone of some of these stories is just this side of bearable. These maudlin moments (and there are one or two in other parts of the text that made me cringe! ) are what some snotty, ill-informed critics have chosen to harp on, though in doing so they miss the point of the book as a whole. Released to celebrate the film's 35th anniversary, the book is intended as a tribute to "SOM" and not a trashing of it. Ms. Carr is too smart not to know that as a tribute -- a bit too gooey in places, thus consistent with the movie's tone -- the book will sell. The book was written to sell, just as the movie itself was. And sell, this book should, in this reviewer's opinion. Despite the lapses in taste mentioned above (a sticky gooiness in parts that actually does not infect the whole book), this is a classy book written by a very classy lady. And dumb, she ain't (she's been a successful businesswoman for years). Ms. Carr knows what most "SOM" fans want in a book about "their" movie, and she gives it to them in spades.
