All the Ugly and Wonderful Things: A Novel, by Bryn Greenwood

A beautiful and provocative love story between two unlikely people and the hard-won relationship that elevates them above the Midwestern meth lab backdrop of their lives.

As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house, until one night her star gazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

By the time Wavy is a teenager, her relationship with Kellen is the only tender thing in a brutal world of addicts and debauchery. When tragedy rips Wavy's family apart, a well-meaning aunt steps in, and what is beautiful to Wavy looks ugly under the scrutiny of the outside world. A powerful novel you won’t soon forget, Bryn Greenwood's All the Ugly and Wonderful Things challenges all we know and believe about love.

Review

"If you're looking for a dangerous, shocking, and unexpectedly touching story, this is it...This is a book that will shake you to the core." -Bustle "31 Books Bringing the Heat this Summer"

"Gritty and dark and tough and uncomfortable, but it's brilliantly contructed...Greenwood develops an incredible and resilient character in Wavy. It's an outstanding debut novel and I am itching for Greenwood's next book." ―Kelly Jensen, Book Riot

"Captivating and smartly written from the first page, Greenwood's work is instantly absorbing. Pithy characters saunter, charge or stumble into each scene via raw, gripping narrative. Greenwood slow-drips descriptions, never giving away everything at once. Rather, she tells her story as if lifting a cloth thread by thread, revealing heartbreaking landscapes and riveting dialogue in perfect timing. This book won't pull at heartstrings but instead yank out the entire organ and shake it about before lodging it back in an unfamiliar position." -Christina Ledbetter, The Associated Press

"Greenwood's haunting novel...is a story that will stay with readers long after the book is finished." -Lisa McLendon, The Wichita Eagle

"Bryn Greenwood has handed readers a strange - but strangely grabbing - tale." -Harry Levins, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Greenwood is a gifted writer, and Wavy's story will stick to your bones long after you put this book down. These characters will fast become friends, and you will find yourself reluctant to leave their ugly and wonderful little world." --Madeline Lemieux, Creative Loafing Charlotte

"An emotionally resonant novel with an unlikely cast of characters you won’t soon forget. Bryn Greenwood’s unique voice and her understanding of human nature offer an amazing tale of family, loss, and love that’s as unpredictable and inspiring as love itself." -Brunonia Barry, New York Times bestselling author of The Lace Reader

"Written in lyrical and searingly honest prose, Bryn Greenwood tells a powerful story of love and resilience against the bleakest of backdrops. Like the best fiction, this is a novel that means to disturb and challenge as it forces us to look with compassion on every last one of its flawed, memorable characters. I was captivated from the first page to the last." -Patry Francis, three time nominee for the Pushcart Prize and author of The Orphans of Race Point

"[A] powerful, provocative debut...intelligent, honest, and unsentimental." -Kirkus Reviews (STARRED)

"The stirring Bryn Greenwood’s All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, so freakishly good and dangerous that it should come with a warning label... the writing is direct and muscular, a snake with all the slithery danger of a coiled rattler on a hot rock. VERDICT Greenwood (from Kansas, daughter of a “mostly reformed drug dealer”) astounds in creating a world where assorted murderers, felons, and thieves are sympathetic. Alternating narrators la The Sound and the Fury create a dynamic where Lolita meets a dissonance of values/taboo romance like East of Eden, Damage, or The Little Mermaid."--Library Journal

“Achingly raw and beautifully written, All the Ugly and Wonderful Things is both a hypnotic coming-of-age story and a heartbreaking tragedy. Greenwood’s emotional prose and her well-drawn characters immediately drew me in and kept me captivated. I’m still thinking about Wavy, and her ugly and wonderful world, long after I’ve turned the last page.” -Jillian Cantor, author of Margot and The Hours Count

"Bryn Greenwood is so good it hurts. Her writing is lean, precise, elegant and dripping with the telling detail-the understated bit of dialogue that reveals everything." -Robert Ferrigno, New York Times bestselling author ofMonkey Boyz, Horse Latitudes, the Prayer for the Assassin trilogy and other novels

"The author skillfully create widely varied and original voices... The is a memorable coming-of-age tale about loyalty, defiance, and the power of love under the most improbable circumstances."-- Publishers Weekly

5+ Stars- All the Way!
By VbLeret
Speechless. This book made me gasp, cry, and laugh. Impossibly beautiful.

It's not often that I write a full review anymore. If I do, it has to be that the book REALLY moved me. Shook me to my core. And, boy, did this story do just that.

I love a story that is controversial, taboo, out of the box, and one that is thought provoking. Not in a shock value type of way, but in an authentic way. I know that this book has had its fair share of controversy surrounding it and I am not even going to give voice to any of that. Because there is no way (in my mind) that anyone could interpret what happened in this book as anything but beautiful. To me, Wavy and Kellen are lovers who will love each other for hundreds of years. Soul mates. That type of love that knows no bounds, and cannot be limited by age, race, sex, or any other dividing factor that society imposes upon us to tell us who we can and cannot love.

I think old man Cutcheon said it best:

"You know," I said. "I married Paola when she was fourteen. And I was twenty-six. Her parents had eleven kids and they was glad to get her settled."

Kellen's reply to that was that those were "different days," and they were. Now, because of 1% of the population who is disgusting, sick, and perverse, ALL love that looks like this is filthy and wrong, right? Well, I disagree. I don't like generalizing ANYTHING. Because in my experience, life always comes with exceptions.

Anywho, I digress. Back to the book.

Wavy is a quiet girl. Smart way beyond her years. Resourceful. Her parents are...jeez, I don't even know what freaking word to use. Her parents (if Liam was even her real dad) are a hot mess. This girl had to fend for herself AND care for her younger infant brother basically from the time she was a small child. Because of some of the deranged things her mother polluted her mind with, she's hyper vigilant of people and germs and pretty much anything.

The only thing she takes comfort in is sneaking out at night and watching the stars. And it's on a night like this, when she's lying under the stars, that she happens to meet Kellen. Well, she saves his life actually.

I have to say that the writing in this book is some of the most exceptional I've ever read in my life. And that is saying a lot. I've read some great stuff. The way that it is narrated is completely brilliant as well. I don't see another way to have told this story. There are many, many points of view. Probably close to 10 or more. But, all of them are geared toward Kellen and Wavy and how THEY see them. So then when you read Wavy and Kellen's POV, it is SOOOO much more revealing.

For example, if you read Kellen's description from Wavy's POV, you would think that he was the most beautiful man who ever roamed the earth. When, in actuality, he is very average looking. Simple. Over-weight. Not super attractive—hardly even swoon-worthy BBF material. But that's not how Wavy sees him. That's just one example. The book is FILLED with things like this. Showing them to you. Brilliant.

It's also freaking funny in places that it really shouldn't have been. I seriously almost peed my pants from laughing so hard when Wavy gave her deposition. So freaking wrong, but I laughed my ass off.

Basically, Kellen is the only person who gave a shit about Wavy and her brother, Donal. Her parents are the epitome of the word neglectful. And then some. If it weren't for him, she probably would be dead. And vice-versa. They saved each other.

"Thanks, but I just came to get Wavy." Kellen looked at me for a second, not long enough. Liam [her dad] made me feel invisible. I needed Kellen to see me."

And for those of you who are squeamish about the underage thing, just know that this book is just not like that. It's not written in an in your face, taboo for the sake of being taboo way. It's raw and unapologetic and honest. Yes, lines are crossed. Big ones. SOME things happen when Wavy is thirteen that any OTHER thirteen year old probably wouldn't be emotionally ready for, but it is consensual and if anything, she is the one pushing for it. I have two girls. I get it. But for me, this book never rubbed me the wrong way. Yes, she was 13, BUT the girl was pretty much an adult mentally by then. Based on the hard life she had led. At least, that is the story that I read. Of course, it is open for interpretation and not everyone will feel the same way. That is the beauty of reading. Me? I was so rooting for these two to get their HEA.

But, fret not, the very controversy that this book is getting is ironic because it's what happens in this story. People vilify Kellen. They think he's a monster, a pedophile. They want to beat him up, keep him from a job, keep him from living any type of normal life. They don't want him to exist. Just like many did not want this book to exist.

I pretty much felt like Wavy's roommate, Renee, who was one of my fave secondary characters of the book, by the way. Chick was hilarious!

"I wanted a fairy tale ending for Wavy, because if she could find happiness, there would be hope for me, too."

This was one of my top 5 reads of 2016 so far. I think it should be made into a film. I don't have enough wonderful things to say about it except that I highly, highly recommend it.

WHAT IS LOVE?
By Laurel-Rain Snow
Wavy’s entry into the world was a precursor of things to come. She was born in the back seat of a stranger’s car, when her laboring mother was picked up while hitchhiking. Meth addict/dealing mother and father, Val and Liam Quinn, were the epitome of emotionally challenged, and as parents, they were so negligent that others often stepped into the parenting role. Liam’s various girlfriends, one of his employees (Kellen), and sometimes Val’s sister Brenda.

As well-meaning as Brenda might have been, she did all the wrong things, in my opinion, exacerbating an already tenuous situation.

Alternating narrators tell the tale of Wavy’s life, beginning in the 1970s. Set in Texas and Oklahoma, we are gifted with the life view of each character as each perspective shifted. We then add a few more pieces to the puzzle of all their lives.

Time moves forward, and we gradually see changes in Wavy, from the little girl who doesn’t seem to eat and hardly ever talks, into a burgeoning young woman who appears in many ways older than her teen years would suggest. Her small stature and frequent silences, however, are deceptively child-like.

The relationship between her and Kellen began serendipitously when his motorcycle crashed near her when she was star-gazing. Immediately they connected over their interest in the stars, and for Kellen, Wavy began to talk, to eat, and to realize that she liked being touched.

When the outside world sees what is going on between Wavy and Kellen, all hell breaks loose. No matter how you might feel about the relationship between the two of them, the fact that the author has been showing us the growing connection between them as a gradual and loving thing, you might find yourself saddened by what happens next.

In a story that spans the 1970s, the 1980s, and into the 1990s, All the Ugly and Wonderful Things: A Novel kept me engaged and changed my perspective on events that would have been troubling in my professional life as a social worker. Was it possible that sometimes we might have to look at a situation and a relationship in ways not proscribed by our society? Is it possible that a relationship that might look “dirty” is anything but? I very happily kept reading until the very satisfying conclusion, rooting for the two of them.

If you're just looking for just "wonderful" but no "ugly," move along as this book is not for you.
By Asianwithoutpersuasion
If you're sheltered and looking for just "Wonderful," this is not your book. "All the Ugly" is part of the title, what did some of you expect?

I read this provocative coming-of-age book in one day. Despite its controversial subject matter, don't be afraid to like this book. I'm not condoning some things that happened, but sometimes it's not necessarily black and white. I like that it doesn't shy away from making you uncomfortable as it pushes the envelope and makes you navigate a murky gray area, making you question your reactions -- both compassionate and judgmental -- to the characters and events unfolding. Not everyone grows up in white picket fences, not everyone falls in love in a conventional manner. Sometimes you just make an unlikely connection with someone you shouldn't -- but does that mean you should act on it? In the end, one thing holds true: there are a lot of ugly things in the world and in people, but also a lot of wonderful -- and with its multiple narrators and first and third person point of views, it goes to show that..... it's all in the eye of the beholder. Keep an open mind.

Excellent survey of what you can do with Arduino
By Mark Colan
This book presents the broad landscape of what's possible with Arduino. It is one of the few Arduino books available that have been updated for Arduino 1.0. Content is organized as "recipes", and you can combine them to do all kinds of things. Knowing what is possible should help to stimulate your imagination. The book does not go deep into any one subject, choosing instead to give you enough to get started, and pointers on where to go for deeper information.

AUDIENCE

Two kinds of skills are required (or developed) to build projects that use Arduino. One is working with electronics - gathering components, assembling them, and connecting them to the Arduino. The other is simple programming in C. If you have these skills but no experience with Arduino and want a quick start, this book will really help.

Someone with little or no experience in these areas may be able to figure it out from Chapter 1 in particular, and reading the rest carefully. Absolute beginners may find it easier to start with an absolute beginners book. If you buy this book and find it is too deep, keep it, you can always get a simpler book, then come back when you're ready.

The book is not a complete introduction to programming or electronics. The author chose to go broad to introduce his audience to a wide range of possibilities, rather than go very deep on any of them, but there is enough info to make it work, and references to go deeper.

CHANGES FROM ARDUINO COOKBOOK FIRST EDITION

The second edition has been updated to the Arduino 1.0 release. It is expanded to 724 pages, 62 more pages, and a few dollars less. Comparing the books side-by-side, the table of contents were nearly identical. The page numbers are different, owing to expanded text in the second edition, and a few new sections:

Sending Messages Using Low-Cost Tranceivers
Communicating with Bluetooth Devices
Updating Third-Party Libraries for Arduino 1.0
Uploading Sketches Using a Programmer
Replacing the Arduino Bootloader
Reprogram the Uno to Emulate a Native USB Device

...and an Appendix: Migrating to Arduino 1.0, which describes the changes you need to make to older code to work with Arduino 1.0.

If you have the first edition, you may not need to get the second edition. You can download the new source code from the publisher's Web site; you can google "Arduino Software Release Notes" for a list of changes, some of which will require minor changes to your code. The author says that a few newer hardware devices have replaced the ones described in the first edition, but less than one year passed between these two editions, so it would not be a lot. The change to Arduino 1.0 should not require changes to circuits.

STRUCTURE

The book has 18 chapters containing a total of 204 topics or "Recipes" structured as a Problem, a Solution, Discussion, and See Also sections. Most problems are things people would really want to do: pieces of a project. Solutions consist of C code and libraries, and electronic components. Discussion might be troubleshooting, variations, or more information. See Also provides references for more information - in the book, and URLs for Web-based information or libraries.

The average "recipe" is 3.1 pages long; some are longer than others.

CONTENT

Chapter 1 discusses the software development environment (which is supported for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but comes from Arduino) and very basic information about the board. In introduces simple programming and wiring by way of the common "blinking light" example. In 21 pages, the goal is to get something running quickly more than learning how it all works.

Two chapters explain a bit about C: types of variables and manipulations; mathematical operations for numeric types.

Programs must have input and/or output to be useful. Since this is what makes your solution come alive, this is the bulk of the book, and the most interesting part.

Chapter 4 introduces serial communications - exchanging information with a computer which is connected to the Arduino via USB. This can be used for I/O to a connected computer, as well as debugging your program by sending status messages at various points in the processing.

Chapter 5 discusses digital and analog input and output at a very basic level - controlling output to pins, and reading input from the pins. This is the foundation for all I/O that follows.

A strength of Arduino is the vast array of devices that work without a lot of extra circuitry. Chapter 6 discusses detecting light (or dark), movement, acceleration, vibration, distance, sound, temperature, location, direction, and interface to a computer mouse or a game controller. Chapter 7 discusses visual output using LEDs alone or in a matrix, 7-segment displays, and meters.

Chapter 8 discusses producing movement, vibration, or controlling external devices with relays and solenoids. Chapter 9 shows you how to make sounds - as tones, melodies, playing recordings, controlling a MIDI synthesizer, and making a simple audio synthesizer.

Chapter 10 presents uses of InfraRed devices (your home stereo, your camera, etc) as well as detecting and acting upon InfraRed signals from remotes you already have. Chapter 11 tells you how to use LCD displays available for Arduino to display text, or how to display text on the TV.

Chapter 12 deals with dates and times - make Arduino aware of passing time, or to work as an alarm clock.

Chapter 13 presents I2C and SPI, standards used for exchanging information between a variety of digital devices. Learn to use a standard and you'll find it can be used with other devices. For example, if you want to use a Wii Nunchuck controller to control your Arduino applications, you will need to learn about I2C. You can also use I2C to talk to external memory added to Arduino, get temperature for an external digital temperature measuring device, or display 4 numbers on 7-segment displays using only two wires.

Chapter 14 is about wireless communication. Chapter 15 discusses using an Ethernet shield to Internet-enable your Arduino application.

Chapter 16 discusses the creation and use of code libraries. Chapter 17 dives deeper into the subject of prgramming, especially in handling memory. Chapter 18 is all about using the controller chip hardware in ways not (yet) supported by libraries.

Nine appendices give basic information on building with electronics, troubleshooting, digital and analog I/O pins, and character sets. For those who have code written prior to the release of Arduino 1.0, an appendix is there to help you migrate.

The source code can be downloaded from the publisher's Web site; the URL is on page xv.

ELECTRONIC VERSION

You should seriously consider the PDF version of the book, because all of the many links are live, and the PDF is on your computer as handy reference. You can always print pages as needed for reference while building. O'Reilly currently has a good deal for upgrading to a new PDF edition.

SUMMARY

The book serves as an introduction to the broadest range of Arduino capabilities of any book I have seen. With a little experience, the book will get you going quickly by demonstrating a working example that may be enough for your purposes. For me, this book is indispensable for Arduino work.

Only for beginners
By Gary Strawn
This is the first time I have ever considered returning a book to Amazon. I purchased this book based on the great reviews and a brief glance through the online preview pages. However, once I received the book I realized that it is not at all what I am looking for.

If you are new to programming, this book may be great. If you already know how to program but want to learn about the Arduino, this is NOT the book for you.

For example, chapters 1-3 discuss basic such as for loops (section 2.14) and the sqrt() function (section 3.8). This book works hard to avoid "advanced" subjects such as pointers and printf. Even in "Chapter 17: Advanced Coding and Memory Handling", there is barely any mention of heap and stack (SRAM) versus static (flash) memory. Sure, Ch.17 mentions the keyword PROGMEM but for any further details, the reader is referred to [...]. I don't need a general discussion of memory management, I bought this book hoping for information on the specific features and quirks of Arduino.

Want to learn about Arduino sleep modes? "18.10: Reducing Battery Drain" might seem like a good recipe. Don't bother though, all it does is reprint the most basic example of using the freely available Narcoleptic library from code.google.com. There is no mention of various Arduino sleep levels, how they may affect your code and what they do to the internal timers.

Let's pick a more basic example, how about a real-time clock? There is absolutely no discussion of the hardware side of a real-time clock. On the software side, there are a couple simple examples on using the standard C time library. It's a bit misleading to see "#include " in recipe 12.4 (note the brackets). Yes, is a standard C library. No, it is not a standard part of the Arduino C library. So the book's example code won't even compile and there is no explanation as to why. The only mention of Time.h being a separate download is a vague mention in the "See Also" section which refers to the [...] website. An experienced programmer should be able to figure this out but anybody that needs three chapters on basic programming may need a bit more of an explanation.

In my opinion, that is where this book repeatedly fails. It acts like each recipe is a self contained problem/solution set. In reality, the majority of print is wasted on repeating the basics in every recipe and all the good information is left to the "See Also" references. What use is this book if I have to look everything up myself anyways?

If you are new to programming and need help with concepts like pointers or i++ instead of i = i + 1; then find a real C programming tutorial (K&R is my recommendation). If you are looking for specific information on how the Arduino actually works, save yourself a few bucks and visit [...] because that's all that this book will tell you to do anyways.

Very Well Done.
By charniw
This is truly a beginners book. It is very well done. The book does not attempt to teach programming or electronics, but gives enough information to actually accomplish the small projects presented. I do have a background in electronics and programming but I followed the steps in the beginning of the book, including downloading and installing the software. Within 15 to 30 minutes we were downloading software to the Arduino and had it working. I also got my 13 year old daughter to make some simple "C" programming changes and download them to the Arduino. This, with no prior background in programming.

The book contains many chapters on interfacing various sensors and devices with Arduino. I scanned them all and each one just gave me more and more ideas on things I wanted to tinker with.

I don't like the icons used in the book for Tips/Warnings - why invent something new. I think the standard yellow caution would be better.

This is a great book and Arduino is an outstanding product for beginners to continue an interest or develop a new interest in electronics/programming.

Space Atlas: Mapping the Universe and Beyond, by James Trefil

Filled with lavish illustrations, this book is a grand tour of the universe. Three ever widening domains are presented--the planets, the stars, and the large scale universe itself--each including the ones before it and extending outward.

The tour starts close to home within the first domain, our own solar system. There is a tremendous variety here, from the sun scorched rocks of Mercury to the icy vastness of the Kuiper Belt beyond Pluto. We see the sun and planets born from the collapse of an interstellar dust cloud whose atoms were themselves created in long dead stars. Since many of these planets have been visited by space probes or landers, we are able to benefit from the incredible technology of exploration developed by NASA and its counterparts in other countries.

The second domain is made up of the billions of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy. We walk in the steps of the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, who first established that the universe is made up of discrete galaxies, then go on to examine the fundamental constituents of those galaxies--the stars. We see stars not as eternal lights in the sky, but as objects born out of a desperate struggle between pressure and gravity. We trace the life cycle of our own sun, from its birth 4.5 billion years ago to its quiet end 6 billion years in the future. We see the galaxy not as a serene and placid place, but as a giant factory, where primordial material is taken up into stars, then returned to the galaxy enriched with the heavy elements necessary for life.

Finally, we move to the ultimate domain--the large scale structure of the universe itself in which galaxies are the building blocks. We discover the most amazing fact, that the solid stuff of stars and planets on which we have been concentrating up to this point make up only a few percent of the mass in the universe, with the rest being composed of two mysterious entities called, respectively, dark matter and dark energy. We descend into deep caverns to see scientists trying to detect dark matter as it sweeps by the Earth, and we talk to theorists trying to solve the riddle of dark energy. This quest brings us to the frontier of knowledge, the edge of the unknown.

To conclude, two ultimate questions remain: How did the universe begin? How will the universe end? We trace our theories back to the first fraction of a second of the life of the universe and listen to the speculations of cosmologists about how it might all have started.

Gr 6 Up-This stunningly beautiful and informative guide to the planets, stars, and beyond is illustrated in full color, providing photographs, art, and computer graphics that will draw readers into the mysteries and vastness of space. Brief biographies credit and introduce scientists who made important discoveries. The book explains, for example, that Edwin Hubble, one of the scientists who transformed our understanding of the universe, was also an outstanding athlete who chose science over a career as a professional boxer. The finding aids in this guide to the solar system, galaxy, and the universe make it highly user friendly. Appended are a table of facts about the planets, in which information about each planet's satellites is alphabetically arranged under each planet heading; a list of notable deep-sky objects-the stars, star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, etc., found beyond our solar system; and a glossary and a list of map terms. The general index uses bold type for the page numbers of illustrations and the biographies of pertinent scientists, and it is followed by a lengthy place-name index. A gorgeous, fact-filled must for reference sections that need up-to-date astronomy information.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MDα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
This beautiful atlas provides the reader with a guide to the known universe. Through maps and photographs, it provides a colorful introduction to planets, stars, and galaxies. Starting with our own solar system (comprising one-half of the work) and moving outward, the atlas describes each feature, provides maps made from the latest satellite imagery, and discusses any unique aspects of the object. It also presents sections on topics and controversies, including black holes, supernovas, the big bang, and string theory. A hybrid atlas–coffee-table book, this low-priced volume will be an excellent addition to the astronomy collection in any library. --David Tyckoson

serious gutter problem
By VA Book Lover
I was eager to get my hands on this new book, which promised to be a nice gift for my cousin and a few other precocious kids I know. But the book is seriously marred by a gutter problem, where many of the maps and illustrations are cut in half! The most interesting parts are trapped in the middle of the tight book binding. In some cases, you can't even see the sun, because it's stuck in the gutter. This is a real shame, since it's obvious that the production values are otherwise very good. The maps of the planets are among the best I've ever seen. The text by Trefil is basic but solid. It's too bad that somebody at National Geographic didn't anticipate these complaints and compensate for the otherwise handsome design by a lay-flat binding or by adding a center gap to compensate for what's missing in the folds. Maybe this systematic shortcoming can be corrected in a new printing. If that's the case, I'll surely want a replacement copy.

A lot of up-to-date information in the new Space Atlas
By Gil
I ordered this book as soon as I read about it, and I was not much disappointed when I received it. It certainly invites browsing, and many of the articles are not particularly long but give all the pertinent data. My only complaint (and I hope the NGS reads this), and reason I cannot give the Space Atlas five stars, is that book does not open flat. A book this size (and price) should open and fold flat on the table. The large 2-page planet maps are split down the middle with the spine of the book running through them, making it difficult to see the topography in the center of the planets. This does not affect the smaller satellite (moon) maps which fit on a single page. The fantastic hardcover Nasa Atlas of the Solar System (1997) also had this problem but resolved it neatly by having the enormous pages fold open completely flat. Nevertheless, I will keep the Space Atlas and refer to it often.

Almost perfect
By tom
This is a beautiful book which gives the reader a great "big picture " view of the universe. My only complaint is that several of the highly detailed graphics span two pages, and some information is buried in the binding, since the book doesn't open flat.

Update July 20,2014 There is a paperback version of this book which is showing up in the clearance section of large book stores. The paperback version opens flat and has no binding problems.

Starting at the very beginning, with a concise overview of the history of science, Okasha examines the nature of fundamental practices such as reasoning, causation, and explanation. Looking at scientific revolutions and the issue of scientific change, he asks whether there is a discernible pattern to the way scientific ideas change over time, and discusses realist versus anti-realist attitudes towards science. He finishes by considering science today, and the social and ethical philosophical questions surrounding modern science.

Another Good VSI Title
By Allen Morgan
Yet another excellent entrant in the VSI series. Okasha, Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of York, gives a well-organized quick tour of the main topics in the Philosophy of Science.
Starting with an introductory chapter on "What is Science", he takes the reader on a tour of "Scientific Reasoning", "Explanation in Science", "Realism and anti-Realism", "Scientific Change and Revolutions". He then adds a chapter on three specific historical philosophical disputes in the Philosophy of Science: (1) the dispute between Newton and Leibniz about the nature of space (absolute or relative), (2) the dispute among three different schools of taxonomic classification in biology and (3) the dispute among psychologists about the 'modularity' of the human mind. He then ends with a wrap up chapter on some of the disputes about science ('Scientism', or an over-reliance on 'science' as a model for all of (or the only legitimate kind of) 'knowledge'; Science and Religion; and the debate around whether Science is 'value-free').
In each case, he gives a very clear, even-handed overview of the arguments that have raged (since the 16th Century) about these topics. He is quite good at giving analogies or examples that make otherwise abstract propositions understandable. He deftly lays out (which is difficult to do) the reasons why philosophical questions about science are not resolvable by science itself, and thus why disputes over these topics continue even today (e.g., all 'empirical' scientific theories ultimately rest on concepts that are more or less 'metaphysical' - which doesn't mean that choosing among fundamental principals is simply a matter of taste, belief or faith (e.g., Creation Science is clearly not just as good a 'scientific' theory as Evolution), but it does help clarify the nature of the assumptions that serve as the foundations of our scientific beliefs). In Okasha's descriptions of the debates over these topics, I often couldn't tell from his writing anything about his own - one of the marks of a good introductory work.
Given the importance of science to modern life, understanding the debates around the core concepts on which modern science rests (and the enormously broad reach (as well as the limits) of science as a way of generating knowledge), is something every educated modern person should do at some level. This little book is an excellent way to get started.

A great little primer to the Philosophy of Science
By Craig MACKINNON
What this book claims to do, it does well. It is in the Oxford "Very Short Introductions" series, and so does not pretend to be anything but a cursory introduction to the field of Philosophy of Science. Given that caveat, the book is well-written, great fun to read, and is still likely to give us mere "laymen" in the field something to think about.

Okasha assumes some scientific and philosophical knowledge on the part of the reader. There is not the space to dedicate explanations of specific scientists or scientific theories. The book appears to be for scientists rather than philosophers - he clearly goes into more detail describing the philosophical aspects than the scientific ones. At the same time, he tries not to take sides in the debates of the field, such as the importance of direct observation, the ideas of Kuhn (on scientific revolutions), Popper (on the definition of science), etc. He also covers the basic scientific issues such as causality, inductive vs. deductive reasoning, and how conflict can arise between science and religion.

I'm not sure if a non-scientist will follow all Okasha's examples. However, it's probably unlikely that a non-scientist will pick up this book. This book has helped me immensely in preparing lectures for a module in "The Nature of Scientific Enquiry" for a general science course we have started this year. The clarity and conciseness with which the author presents the material makes this a nice little book, well worth the low cost.

Great Introduction
By Scott Stratton
I am a layman learning about Evolutionary Biology. Naturally I've been drawn into the ID/Evolution debate (in some cases on this site) and as part of that debate you end up talking a lot about what science really is, and particularly, what is a Theory. Lots of opponents of evolution cry out that it is ONLY A THEORY. True, but it is a theory (as I learned from this book) in the same sense as all other "theories"; such as the theory of gravity, theory of electricity, etc.! And so on... so anyway, I felt I needed to understand more about the "science of science".

I picked this up to get that brief education and I was richly rewarded. It provides a thorough but concise introduction to the Philosophy of Science. It covers the main topics and gives summaries of the major points of view. It gives references to further reading and even provides some charts and graphics. I now feel equipped to at least discuss the basic problems of the philosophy of science and now know where to go get more information.

My only criticism is the chapter that describes a specific problem in the philosophy of science from 3 of the main branches of science (Physics, Biology, and Psychology). I thought the Biology and Psychology examples were pretty weak - they didn't seem like much of a controversy today or terribly relevant. The controversy in Biology between Cladistics and Phenetics has some historical interest, but doesn't seem to be a pressing current issue (but I'm not a professional biologist, either, in all fairness).

That small issue aside, it was a great read. I recommend it and I'm going to go buy and read some more of the books in this series.

Review
Praise for the first edition:
"The author does an admirable job of combining all aspects of traditional and new media in each chapter. The accompanying CD-ROM (future website) offers visual and audio examples of production design and is itself a good example of nonlinear programming in covering the concepts of storyboarding and releases, visual aesthetics, [and more]." -CHOICE

Making complex issues clear
By Nitsa Kedem
This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.

The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.

Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Great foundation for film students
By C. Vieira
This book reads as a bit dated, but the foundations you learn from it are terrific. I used this as a textbook in a film production class and learned quite a lot. We were assigned certain chapters but I read the whole book on my own because I learned so much from it. If you're new to film and media production definitely pick up this book. I still keep it on my shelf and reference it every once in a while.

not for solo guitar embellishments
By whosayswhat
I bought this book thinking it was good for cowboy chord embellishments. Rather it is a book on embellishments to be used chords already played in a band. It is 56 pages. If you are a solo player like me, this is no good. If you are in a Band you will find it far more useful. Just my two cents. But its completely useless to me again, because i only play solo as a hobby.
