a reconstructed print triumphed in its first screening at the Venice Film Festival. Since then it has claimed its place among the cinema’s most profound and fascinating achievements. Fran�ois Truffaut was just one of a host of directors inspired by La R�gle du jeu: ‘the credo of film lovers, the film of films, the most despised on its release and the most valued afterward.’

V.F. Perkins traces the movie’s fortunes from the time of its production. He offers a nuanced account that explores its shifting moods, the depth of its themes and the uniqueness of its style. La R�gle du jeu is renowned for its construction as an ensemble piece with a large cast of principal characters. Perkins follows this cue and frames his analysis as a discussion of four key actors and their roles in the film – Roland Toutain (Andr�), Marcel Dalio (Robert), Nora Gregor (Christine) and Renoir himself as Octave. Exploring characterisation becomes a means to shed light on the subtlety of Renoir’s direction. Casting, composition, d�cor and cutting are seen to work with the complex organisation of shots in deep focus to develop a challenging perspective on the bourgeoisie of 1939, in Renoir’s words, ‘dancing on a volcano’.

A Little Book with a Big Message

My mother fought a ten year battle with Alzheimer's. Our family helped her through it as best we could, learning about AD as we went through trial, error, grief and horror. This pocket guide for AD caregivers would have been a great resource for us during those years. Its straight-forward, just the facts ma'am, no frills approach is exactly what caregivers need when faced with specific AD related problems. The pocket guide, though short, is amazingly broad in its treatment of various situations that may arise. The authors combine technical information about AD with personal, tender accounts of their own experiences with family members struggling with AD. It is an excellent resource. I hope it finds its way into the hands of caregivers, family members and others who are laboring together in the AD community.

A high-quality textbook on electronic music

Thom Holmes's third edition of this book is divided into four parts: a history of electronic music up to 1960; an explanation of the techniques and tools used in analog synthesis; a discussion of the principles and techniques behind digital synthesis; and an exploration of various genres of electronic music. Because this book is a textbook, the coverage of what Holmes chooses to discuss is admirably thorough. However, because it is a textbook, meant for use in the college classroom, Holmes focuses almost entirely on non-popular music, i.e. "classical" and experimental music. There is only one chapter on electronic popular music, and it seems to me the one he spent the least amount of time updating. It's hard to write about electronic popular music without discussing electronic dance music, yet, apart from a sidebar featuring Gary Numan (!), Holmes manages to do it. Holmes focuses exclusively on "avant-garde" popular music in this chapter, and while that's understandable and perhaps acceptable for a college textbook, it's also a little misleading as far as gaining an understanding of electronic music in general is concerned. Despite these points, this is a very well-written book and a solid introduction to electronic music.
