This comprehensive, historically organized introduction to philosophy communicates the richness of the discipline and provides the student with a working knowledge of the development of Western philosophy. With a lively and approachable style it covers the principal contributions of Western civilization's most influential philosophers. It provides ample detail without complicating minutiae. The text covers all periods of philosophy, lists philosophers alphabetically and chronologically on the end-papers, and features an exceptional glossary of key concepts.

Wonderful Overview of Philosophy
By Don Reynolds
I got this book for a history of philosophy series. Having read the entire book I can say that it is the best overview of philosophy that I have ever seen. I have done an extensive amount of philosophical reading of the original texts (Aristotle, Locke, Hume, Descarte, Kant, Russel, Wittgenstein) and this book covered all of the major themes of the authors concisely and clearly. This book could be a little difficult for someone who doesn't already enjoy philosophy, but it is far clearer than almost all of the original writings and should be easily comprehendable to someone with a college reading level. It is not nearly as dry as many text-books, actually encouraging me to pick it up and read it for enjoyment.

Good but,

I want to tell you something about this book, and If you have a plan to buy it for philosophy study, you should follow my advice.
You can search another book written by same author. The name of book is 'Philosophy: History and Reading. It is much expensive than this book. But that book includes additional reading parts of philosophy works. I bought this book and another book, because I thought that those books include totally different contents. But it was not true. You don't have to buy this book because another Samuel's book includes same contents and additional reading parts. So buy another book instead of this. Repeat, Philosophy: reading and history has Socrates to Sartre's contents and more. You don't have to buy both.

Can't we expect more of ourselves?
By Pen Name?
If you are already interested in some aspects of philosophy and have engaged with the writing of some figures, you might have an interest in learning more about the general narrative of the history of western philosophy and the canonical thinkers and general movements of work over the centuries, but if you don't, I can't figure out how you'd get interested in the subject enough to want to wade through this progressive narrative. That said, I teach philosophy and I've never found any "textbook" that was much more engaging in a really rigorous way. All said, I'd prefer using this than some text that tries to dumb down "big questions" just to get a quick response from a shortchanged student. So, pick your poison if you are forced to assign a "textbook," but all told... I'd rather see more profs having the courage to focus on select texts and teach to their strengths... pick out a few core texts and fill in details of the broader concepts, problems and history around those... have something substantial to engage with and discuss... What's the point of memorizing facts without that?
