it takes a smart man to make a really stupid cartoon
By Lynn Hoffman, author:Radiation Days: A Comedy
This is a very subversive series of cartoons. It subverts not just your sense of order, but the very post-modern notion that it's not all right to laugh at stupid people. (you did know that, didn't you?) One of the least funny examples is Lewis and Clark's first attempt to find the northwest passage. It shows the toddling off in flip flops with a beach umbrella and a picnic cooler between them. Then there's the billboard that says "finally, a dog food that the whole family can enjoy" and the fella saying to his friend 'what do they mean, finally?' Or the lawyer who tells his client 'This time don't wink at me when you put your hand on the bible'.

But, as with the similarly mordant The Book of Bunny Suicides there's another level of subversion. Check out the joke where the bunny is heading toward the surf at the same moment that all the other creatures on the beach are running in terror from the very obvious shark. Return of the Bunny Suicides. I don't know about you, but there have been times in my life when I've waded in when every sane person was running away. So when one guy in Hell turns to another sufferer and says "Don't forget our secret weapon.........Sarcasm!"or when the guy in the condemned cell says "ok, i'm ready to apologize." we can all have a good laugh-right up until we recognize someone we know. . . .

Humor among the best of the best
By David in Denver
I have been a fan of Joe Martin's brilliance since the mid-1980s. I have clipped his cartoons ever since to keep in my files along with my favorites from The New Yorker. Along with Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County, Opus), Gary Trudeau of Doonesbury fame, Gary Larson of The Far Side, Wiley of the ever brilliant and enlightening Non Sequitor, and most recently, Darby Conley of Get Fuzzy (and chosen a few years ago by fellow cartoonists as the best of that year), Joe Martin is not just prolific. He has tapped into some sacred cows for some of his humor including heaven and hell, prisons and executions, marriage, poverty business ... each of his creations is like a small essay composed in one seemingly simple yet, hilarious panel.
The New Yorker has lost a few great cartoonists including Leo Cullum and Charles Barzotti. I would urge their cartoons editor, Bob Mankoff, to seriously consider adding Joe Martin to his stable of artists.
I have three books by Joe Martin including "Unclear on the Concept," "The First Decade" and "Shrink Wrapped." Martin also has other cartoons including Cats with Hands, which is a wonderful anthropomorphic journey.

I think Carlos is quitting ...
By Bryan Smith
I was a little disappointed that this didn't have the classic bit with the headsman observing that everyone always has something to complain about, or something along those lines. But it was filled with a bunch of other Boffo classics, so, you know. Still a win.
